There is no single exam called the “ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor Exam” that ISO administers or requires. ISO 9001 certifies an organization’s quality management system, not an individual. Training providers create their own auditor courses, assessments, and credentials, so the provider’s name and current rules determine what you will be tested on.
What the ISO 9001:2015 internal auditor exam is
ISO explains that individuals are not certified to ISO 9001; organizations can have their quality management systems certified. A person may complete auditor training or earn a qualification from a training provider, but that is not personal certification to the ISO 9001 standard. ISO’s explanation of ISO 9001 certification
As a result, the exam title alone does not identify a universal exam, syllabus, pass mark, or credential. For any specific exam, check who issues the certificate and who sets the assessment. An exam sample published by a private organization is that organization’s material, not an official ISO examination.
What candidates should study
Use the applicable ISO 9001:2015 requirements text as your core reference. Confirm with your provider which edition and amendments its course and assessment cover. Provider syllabuses commonly combine understanding the requirements with practical audit work; this is a recurring pattern, not a guaranteed exam blueprint.

Exam format and passing rules depend on the provider
There is no universal question count, time limit, open-book rule, or passing score. Published examples illustrate how much offerings differ:
| Provider or organization | Published assessment detail | What the detail applies to |
|---|---|---|
| ASQ | Its cited course is 24 hours and includes two competency exams, QM and AU. The course page does not state a universal passing threshold. | ASQ’s course, not an ISO-wide exam rule. ASQ course page |
| TÜV SÜD Bangladesh | The course description specifies an open-book written exam and a 60% minimum threshold. | This Bangladesh course offering and its internal auditor certificate. TÜV SÜD Bangladesh course page |
| BSI | Each module is followed by a mandatory online multiple-choice examination. | BSI’s practitioner qualification. BSI qualification page |
| GAQM | Publishes a sample exam under its “ISO 9001:2015 Certified Internal Auditor” name and exam code. | GAQM’s own exam example; it is not an official ISO exam. GAQM sample exam |
Before enrolling, ask the provider about the current assessment format, whether materials are allowed, the passing threshold, retakes, and which credential the assessment awards. Course details and availability can change; confirm the live terms for your location and delivery mode.
How to prepare effectively
- Get the right requirements text. Confirm the edition and amendments expected by your provider, then study the requirements rather than relying only on summaries. ASQ says attendees of its cited course must have their own copy of the ASQ/ANSI/ISO 9001:2015 requirements standard. ASQ course prerequisite
- Map requirements to audit evidence. For each requirement, practice identifying what evidence could show conformity and what would justify documenting a potential nonconformity. The aim is to apply the requirements during an audit, not just recall clause labels.
- Practice the audit cycle. Work through planning, interviews and evidence collection, recording findings, reporting, and follow-up. Use the syllabus of your chosen provider to decide which activities receive the most attention.
- Use supplemental guidance as guidance. The ISO 9001 Auditing Practices Group (APG) publishes papers on topics such as internal audit, evidence collection, audit planning, nonconformity documentation, reporting, and risk-based thinking. The group cautions that its papers are not definitive requirements or universal criteria for every auditor. Use them alongside, not in place of, the applicable standard and your provider’s syllabus. ISO 9001 Auditing Practices Group papers
- Match practice to the actual exam. Once you know whether your provider uses written, online, open-book, or other assessments, rehearse under those conditions and focus on its published learning objectives.
How to compare courses and credentials
Compare the issuer and credential, geographic availability, delivery format, prerequisites, coverage of requirements and practical audit work, and the assessment and retake rules. Check whether the course awards a provider qualification or is part of a broader auditor registration pathway. For a course marketed as a certification, distinguish the provider’s credential from ISO 9001 certification of an organization’s quality management system.
Structured options in the cited provider materials include ASQ’s Certified Internal Auditor course, TÜV NORD India’s two-day internal auditor course, and BSI’s practitioner qualification. Those descriptions are provider-specific; confirm current availability, geography, partner arrangements, and assessment rules directly with the provider. ASQ · TÜV NORD India · BSI
