The Zelle outage described in reports occurred on May 2, 2025; it is not evidence that Zelle is down now. At the time, users at some banks and credit unions reported trouble sending or receiving transfers, and some payments showed as pending. Zelle attributed the disruption to a third-party provider, while reporting linked the affected infrastructure to Fiserv. The incident was later reported resolved, with a backlog being processed. If a transfer is pending now, check its status in your bank app and contact your bank before resending it.
Was Zelle down, and what happened?
On May 2, 2025, users at multiple financial institutions reported problems sending or receiving Zelle transfers. Zelle said certain users at certain institutions were affected by an issue involving a third-party provider. Reporting later identified the provider-related infrastructure as connected to Fiserv; Fiserv said its internal issue had been resolved and that it was processing a backlog. Reports declined later that day, though transactions could still take time to clear. AOL’s coverage of the incident and follow-up reporting describe the disruption and response.
Downdetector showed 772 user reports at 1:56 p.m. Eastern and later approximately 988. Those counts reflect reports submitted to the service at particular times; they are not official Zelle outage metrics or a count of all failed transfers. The available reporting describes an impact on some users at multiple institutions, not a confirmed outage for every Zelle customer.
How to tell whether the issue is broad or local
Zelle is commonly accessed inside a bank or credit union’s app or online banking, so an error can originate in different places. A widespread vendor disruption may affect customers at several institutions, while a bank-app login failure or a bank-specific outage may affect only that institution’s customers. Recipient enrollment problems, fraud controls and ordinary processing delays can also produce a failed or pending transfer.

What does a pending Zelle payment mean?
“Pending” does not by itself mean money has disappeared or that the payment has permanently failed. Zelle says a payment may remain pending when the recipient has not enrolled the exact email address or U.S. mobile number to which it was sent. In the May 2025 disruption, pending status could also reflect delayed processing or a backlog. These are different possibilities, and the status shown by your bank is the starting point for resolving them.
Zelle’s guidance says that when a payment is pending because the recipient has not enrolled the address or number, the sender may have an option to cancel. If the payment is marked completed, Zelle says the funds have reached the recipient’s bank account. The cancellation option is not guaranteed for every pending payment or every bank interface. See Zelle’s guidance for a payment the recipient says they did not receive.

What to do if Zelle is not working
- Check the transaction record. In your bank or credit union app, open Zelle activity or payment history. Note the status, amount, recipient, time and any confirmation number.
- Do not send the same payment again yet. A delayed transfer may later complete, so resending before you know the original status can create a duplicate payment.
- Confirm the recipient details. Ask the recipient to check the account linked to the payment and confirm whether the exact email address or U.S. mobile number is enrolled.
- Check your institution’s status. Look for a bank or credit union service notice, and determine whether other banking features are also failing.
- Contact your bank or credit union. For Zelle inside its app or online-banking service, the financial institution is generally the right first support contact. Use the number on the back of your debit card, or the institution’s official website. Zelle also directs bank-app users to their institution; see its support guidance.
- Keep evidence. Save screenshots of error messages and the transaction status, along with the time and confirmation details.
- Wait for the original payment’s status before switching methods. For rent, bills or other obligations, coordinate with the recipient so neither party assumes the first transfer failed while it may still complete.
If your balance changed but the recipient has not received the money
A change in your available balance does not, by itself, establish whether a transfer is pending, completed or held. Possible explanations include an uncompleted recipient enrollment, a processing backlog, a recipient checking the wrong account, a payment sent to a different enrolled contact, or a bank fraud or compliance review. Ask your financial institution to identify the transaction’s exact status and next step. Zelle’s guidance says to contact the bank or credit union when the status is unclear.
If the transaction is completed, do not assume it is merely delayed: Zelle’s guidance says completed payments have reached the recipient’s bank account. If you sent money to the wrong enrolled person or did not authorize the transfer, tell your financial institution promptly and explain exactly what happened. A scam, an unauthorized payment and a service delay require different responses.

Was the outage caused by hacking?
Reporting attributed the May 2 incident to a third-party provider and said the provider described it as an internal issue, not malicious activity. That is the provider’s reported characterization, not a substitute for an independently published forensic finding. The available reporting does not establish that the incident was a hack.
Is the standalone Zelle app still a way to send money?
No. Zelle announced that it would remove the ability to send or receive money through its standalone app beginning April 1, 2025. Customers whose banks or credit unions offer Zelle should access it through that institution’s app or online banking; Zelle says more than 2,200 banks and credit unions offer the service through their own digital channels. The app change is a permanent product transition, not a temporary outage. Details are in Zelle’s FAQ about the app change and its October 31, 2024 announcement.

If you do not have a smartphone, some institutions may provide access through online banking, but availability depends on the institution. Check with your bank or credit union; Zelle also explains this limitation in its no-smartphone FAQ.

An alternative can help only if the recipient can use it and both parties understand when the original Zelle transfer is considered finished. Do not send a second payment through another service while the Zelle payment may still complete. Before switching, agree with the recipient that the original transfer has failed or been canceled.

Transfer timing, limits, identity checks, fees and dispute handling vary by provider and can change. Review the current terms before sending. A payment app is not a sound workaround if the recipient lacks an account, you need guaranteed immediate settlement, or you are being pressured to send money to “unlock,” “verify” or recover a payment. For a purchase, review the service’s protections and consider whether a method with purchase dispute rights is more appropriate.
How to avoid outage-related payment scams
Confusion about pending transfers can make users vulnerable to impersonation. Treat an unexpected call or message claiming to be from Zelle or your bank with caution, especially if it asks for your password, a one-time verification code, or a payment to release or recover funds. Contact your financial institution through the number on your card or its official app instead. Do not share sign-in credentials or codes with someone who contacts you.
