Lundin Mining’s February 2026 preliminary economic assessment instead reports after-tax net present value (NPV) estimates of $9.5 billion under its base-case metal prices and $28.8 billion under a higher-price scenario. Those figures are modeled project economics—not the gross value of all metal estimated underground, and not guaranteed returns.
What the headline is referring to
The claim appeared in an Indian Defence Review article published July 24, 2025. It concerns Vicuña, a mining district on the Argentina–Chile border that includes the Filo del Sol and Josemaría deposits. Lundin Mining describes the discovery as the largest greenfield copper discovery in the last 30 years; that is the company’s characterization, not proof of an unqualified global ranking of copper, gold and silver deposits.
Filo del Sol is a copper-gold-silver system that straddles the border. Josemaría is about 10 kilometres away in San Juan Province, Argentina. Lundin describes the district’s geology as porphyry-epithermal.
Why the $204 billion figure is not a project valuation
The primary disclosures cited for Vicuña do not establish how the headline’s $204 billion was calculated. A multiplication of estimated underground metal by market prices, if that is what a headline figure represents, would be a gross in-ground value, not the cash a mine can earn. Such a calculation does not account for how much metal can be recovered and sold, the time required to develop and operate a mine, capital and operating costs, taxes, or the effect of discounting future cash flows.

For a financial comparison, the more relevant figures in Lundin Mining’s February 2026 preliminary economic assessment (PEA) are its modeled after-tax NPVs. NPV estimates the present value of projected future cash flows under stated assumptions. It is not the same as the quantity or market value of the metal underground, nor is it a guaranteed sale price for the project.

Both rows are sensitivity scenarios in the same preliminary study, not separate projects or assured outcomes. The higher NPV in the second row reflects its higher assumed metal prices; it should not be treated as a replacement for the base case or as a forecast of what investors will receive.

What the resource estimate reports
Lundin Mining’s February 2026 resource disclosure gives estimates effective October 31, 2025, on a 100% project basis. Measured and indicated resources are reported separately from inferred resources because the categories carry different levels of geological confidence.

These are contained-metal estimates, not amounts of metal already mined or guaranteed to be recovered. Inferred resources are less certain than measured and indicated resources. Neither category should be relabelled as a proven reserve: Lundin says mineral resources that are not reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability.

The PEA outlines a proposed three-stage development, rather than an operating mine or completed construction project:

- Stage 1: Develop the Josemaría deposit and a sulphide mill. Lundin estimates Stage 1 capital at $7.1 billion in the 2026 PEA.
- Stage 2: Add leachable Filo del Sol oxides and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant.
- Stage 3: Expand the concentrator and develop Filo del Sol sulphides, alongside district infrastructure including desalination and pipelines.
The company’s PEA projects an initial mine life of more than 70 years. It also projects average annual production over the first 25 full years of about 395,000 tonnes of copper, 711,000 ounces of gold and 22.2 million ounces of silver. These are company projections, not observed production.
A PEA is an early-stage economic study, not a bankable mine valuation. Lundin says this assessment is preliminary, includes inferred resources and has no certainty of being realized. Its CEO, Jack Lundin, described the results in the February 16, 2026 announcement as “a major step towards advancing the Vicuña Project to a sanction decision”—a future decision, not confirmation that the project has been approved or built.

What a personal-finance reader should take away
- Do not treat the $204 billion headline claim as established project value: its calculation is not shown in the primary disclosures cited here.
- Keep resource estimates, reserves and project economics distinct. Vicuña’s reported contained metal is not a proven mineable inventory, and the PEA NPVs are model outputs based on assumptions.
- The project-wide resource figures are not an individual company’s share: Vicuña Corp. is owned 50:50 by Lundin Mining and BHP.
- Neither the resource estimates nor the PEA figures establish a particular return for shareholders. The assessment is preliminary, and its projected development, production and economics are not guaranteed.
