Re:

Is Venmo still down? What the October 2025 AWS outage means for payments

The Venmo disruption linked to AWS was a resolved October 20, 2025 incident—not verified proof of a current August 2026 outage. Here’s how to check status and protect pending payments.

There is no independently verified evidence in the available information of a Venmo-wide or AWS outage on August 16–18, 2026. The outage matching this headline was a historical incident on October 20, 2025, when problems in AWS’s US-EAST-1 region coincided with Venmo login, payment and loading failures.

AWS later reported that its services had returned to normal. However, restored app access does not automatically settle every pending payment or bank transfer, so check each transaction before trying again.

What happened to Venmo?

On October 20, 2025, users reported Venmo login errors, failed payments, loading problems and intermittent app performance during a broader AWS disruption. Contemporary coverage also reported a Venmo notice referring to an issue involving a cloud-provider partner.

By that evening, user reports had fallen substantially and Venmo appeared largely restored. This should be treated as a report of the 2025 incident—not confirmation that Venmo is down now.

AWS’s official incident record marks the event resolved. Its public update says all AWS services had returned to normal operation by 3:01 p.m. PDT on October 20, with the final incident update at 3:53 p.m. PDT.

Why could an AWS outage affect Venmo?

AWS supplies cloud infrastructure used by many consumer applications. If a regional service or dependency becomes unavailable, an app may have trouble authenticating users, loading account data, processing API requests, sending notifications or completing payment workflows.

The October incident was centered on AWS’s US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia. AWS initially reported increased error rates and latency across multiple services. It later identified DNS-resolution problems involving the regional DynamoDB endpoint.

AWS said the DynamoDB DNS issue was mitigated by 2:24 a.m. PDT, but recovery continued because other internal systems—including EC2 instance-launch operations—remained impaired. Significant recovery was reported by 12:28 p.m. PDT, followed by the later declaration of normal operation. See AWS’s official outage update and its post-event summaries.

This does not mean all of AWS was globally offline, nor does it prove that every Venmo failure came directly from the DynamoDB DNS problem. The evidence shows that Venmo problems coincided with the AWS incident and that users were affected while the regional disruption was underway.

Should you retry a Venmo payment?

Do not immediately resend a payment that appeared to fail. An outage can make a completed transaction look unsuccessful or prevent the app from displaying the latest status.

Square Reader for magstripe (with Lightning connector)
  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Before retrying:

  1. Open Venmo transaction history and check whether the payment is marked failed, pending or completed.
  2. Ask the recipient whether the payment arrived.
  3. Check your linked bank account or card for a debit, authorization or reversal.
  4. Look for Venmo email or push confirmations.
  5. Save screenshots, timestamps and transaction IDs.

If the payment is duplicated, remains stuck, is reversed incorrectly or is missing after service recovery, contact Venmo support. Do not assume that every unsuccessful-looking transaction will reverse on the same timetable; timing depends on the transaction type and payment method.

Failed, pending and completed payments are different

Status or symptom What it may mean What to do
Failed before confirmation The payment may not have been created, but verify first. Check history and your bank or card before retrying.
Pending Venmo has not finished processing the transaction. Wait for an updated status and avoid creating another payment.
Completed but unseen by recipient The recipient’s app or account view may be delayed. Compare both transaction histories; do not resend immediately.
Duplicate charge or payment Multiple attempts may have been accepted despite confusing error messages. Document each transaction and contact support.
Bank transfer still processing Transfers may use separate processing steps from peer-to-peer payments. Check the transfer status rather than assuming Venmo is entirely unavailable.

How to tell whether Venmo is broadly down

  1. Check Venmo notices and official support channels. Look for an in-app message or an official service update.
  2. Check PayPal’s status information. During the 2025 incident, contemporary reporting said Venmo-related information appeared through PayPal’s status system. Status pages can lag behind intermittent or regional failures.
  3. Check the AWS Health Dashboard. AWS says its public dashboard shows public events, affected services, regions, severity and update timelines. Account-specific events require sign-in; see the AWS dashboard documentation.
  4. Check Downdetector. A sudden increase in reports can indicate broad user impact. Downdetector says it compares reports with normal levels for that time of day, but it is not an official Venmo or AWS confirmation. Visit the Venmo report page or its map and methodology context.
  5. Test your connection carefully. Try both Wi-Fi and cellular data, without repeatedly submitting payments.

When the problem may be specific to you

One failed login or payment does not establish a Venmo-wide outage. Consider a local or account-specific issue when:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Only the mobile app fails while the website works.
  • The problem disappears after switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  • Only one card, bank connection or recipient is affected.
  • Your account is subject to identity verification, security review or a payment hold.
  • Login or multifactor authentication fails on one device but works elsewhere.
  • Payments work but bank transfers do not, or vice versa.

Force-close and reopen the app, install updates only from the official App Store or Google Play listing, and test the affected function separately. Avoid clearing app data or reinstalling until you know you can access your required authentication methods.

Security warning during an outage

Outages create opportunities for phishing. Be cautious of messages claiming to restore your account or release a payment. Do not give anyone your Venmo password, PIN or one-time security code. Use the official app or website to contact support rather than an unsolicited link.

Bottom line

The widespread AWS event associated with Venmo failures occurred on October 20, 2025, was concentrated in US-EAST-1 and was subsequently resolved. No current August 2026 Venmo/AWS outage is established by the available evidence. If Venmo is failing for you, verify whether the issue is widespread and check the exact status of any payment before trying again.
