UPI has transaction safeguards, but it is not risk-free: scams can trick you into authorizing a payment yourself. The most important rule is simple: never share your UPI PIN, and never enter it to receive money. Before approving anything, check what the app says you are authorizing and who will receive the money.
How safe is UPI?
UPI is an instant bank-payment system accessed through participating apps. Its safeguards do not prevent every scam: fraudsters may impersonate support, send deceptive links or requests, or pressure you into approving a payment. Your PIN is used to authorize bank transactions, so keep it private. NPCI says not to share it and that bank customer support will never ask for it. NPCI’s UPI FAQs
Pause before approving a request. Read the recipient and the action shown on your screen; do not rely on what a caller, buyer, or message sender says the action will do.
What UPI scams should you watch for?
Fake cashback, rewards, or refunds
An unexpected message may offer cashback or a refund through a link or QR code, then prompt you to enter your PIN. NPCI warns that scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. Verify any payment or refund in your own app rather than trusting a screenshot or message. QR codes and requests disguised as incoming payments
A stranger may say you must scan a QR code or approve a request to receive money. That instruction is a warning sign, not a normal way to receive funds. RBI consumer-awareness guidance explains that a PIN prompt to complete a transaction means money is being sent from your side. RBI’s Be(A)ware guide, dated 7 March 2022
Online-sale buyer tricks
A supposed buyer may send a payment request and persuade you to approve it while claiming it will pay you. Treat the app’s screen as decisive: entering your PIN authorizes a transaction, rather than passively accepting money. If the screen says you are paying, stop unless you intend to send that amount to that recipient.

Impersonation, malicious links, and threats
Fraudsters may pose as bank or payment-app support, use search results or social-media grievance posts to mislead people, or send links and threats through messages. Do not use a phone number or link supplied in an unsolicited message. Find your bank’s support route independently. NPCI lists these and other deceptive approaches in its UPI safety guidance.
Unknown apps and fake investments
Be wary of requests to install unfamiliar apps or join investment schemes promising returns. NPCI includes unknown app downloads and fake investment schemes among the patterns that call for caution. Do not grant access or enter payment credentials just because someone claims it is needed to release funds or investigate a problem.

Claims that opening an app automatically sends money
In a clarification dated 13 January 2025, NPCI said that the “jumped deposit” scenario it addressed did not process a payment merely because someone opened a UPI or bank app: the described flow required selecting the request, explicitly choosing “pay,” and entering a PIN. That statement concerns the mechanism described in NPCI’s clarification; it is not a guarantee that every attack is impossible. NPCI’s 13 January 2025 clarification
How to protect your money before approving a transaction
- Keep authentication details private. Never disclose your UPI PIN, OTP, or other authentication details to a caller or message sender. NPCI specifically says bank support will never ask for your UPI PIN.
- Read the action and recipient in the app. Before entering your PIN, check the amount, recipient, and whether the screen asks you to pay or approve a request. If you do not understand the action, cancel and verify it through a trusted route.
- Do not use a PIN or QR code to receive funds. This applies to purported refunds, cashback, and sale proceeds. Check for actual receipt in your own transaction history.
- Avoid unfamiliar links and apps. Do not install an app or follow a support link sent unexpectedly. Locate the bank’s official support channel independently.
- Review requests and transaction history. Check pending collect requests and recent transactions in your app. BHIM lists transaction-history and request-management features, including controls to block or mark illicit collect requests; controls vary by app. BHIM
- If your phone is lost, act quickly. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number associated with UPI. Contact your bank or payment provider as well. NPCI’s UPI FAQs
What to do if money is missing or you suspect fraud
- Contact your bank promptly using a support route you verify independently. NPCI directs users to their bank for fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorized transactions. Keep the transaction reference, time, amount, recipient or UPI ID, and relevant messages.
- Report cyber financial fraud in India. Call 1930 immediately and file a report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The portal requests incident details and supporting information, so preserve relevant records.
- Raise an issue in the app when available. NPCI says transaction-status checks and grievances can be raised through participating bank UPI apps. BHIM also lists issue reporting for declined transactions. App features differ.
- Follow up through the appropriate complaint channel. NPCI’s complaint mechanism routes eligible complaints to the relevant member bank or institution, which is responsible for resolution. NPCI’s complaint information
Failed transaction or scam payment: why the difference matters
A failed transaction where your account was debited is different from a payment you authorized after being deceived. NPCI says failed debits should reverse and advises contacting your bank if the money does not return immediately. It also says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. That guidance does not promise that an authorized scam transfer will be recovered. NPCI’s UPI FAQs
