Trader Joe’s frozen Wild Alaskan Black Cod Sablefish with Miso Marinade has been called a lower-cost Nobu dupe, but that’s a subjective comparison—not evidence that the products share a recipe or taste identical. Reviews in 2026 reported prices of $9.99, though the package and serving descriptions differ and neither establishes today’s price at your local store.
What Trader Joe’s sells—and what “black cod” means
The item is a frozen sablefish fillet with miso marinade. BuzzFeed’s January 23, 2026 review identifies black cod and sablefish as names for the same fish, citing NOAA Fisheries. Good Housekeeping described the product as wild-caught Alaskan sablefish with a miso-sake glaze.
The word “dupe” describes the comparison made by reviewers; it does not establish that Trader Joe’s uses Nobu’s recipe or that Nobu endorses the product.
What the reported $9.99 price covers
Three 2026 articles reported $9.99, but their descriptions are not identical:
#1 Best Overall
- Responsibly Farmed or sustainable wild-caught
- Certain preservatives prohibited, including sodium bisulfite and STPP
- Traceable to farm or fishery
| Report | Reported price and amount | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| BuzzFeed, January 23, 2026 | $9.99 before tax for a local 10-ounce package | A local price and package size reported by Jen Shiori Adams; not a national price. |
| Good Housekeeping, March 25, 2026 | $9.99 for two small servings | Lisa Futterman’s reported price and serving description. |
| Chowhound, March 15, 2026 | $9.99 for two five-ounce portions | A secondary report; not a current or nationwide shelf-price check. |
These reports do not verify a current price, local availability, or a like-for-like cost comparison with Nobu’s restaurant dish. Check your store for the shelf price and stock before budgeting around the headline figure.
How the Trader Joe’s fish compares with Nobu’s recipe
Food Network’s recipe, credited to Nobu Matsuhisa and citing Nobu: The Cookbook (Kodansha International, October 2001), uses black cod, sake, mirin, water, sugar, and white miso. It calls for marinating the fish in the refrigerator for two to three days, then browning it on a grill or under a broiler and baking it for 10 to 15 minutes. The recipe yields four servings.

- Raw Chilean sea bass fillet
- Sustainable wild caught
- This item is raw and requires cooking
- Sold by the pound
The Trader Joe’s item is a frozen retail product with marinade, so it offers a more convenient route to a similar style of miso-glazed fish. That is a difference in product and preparation, not proof of matching ingredients, technique, or result. The reviewed sources do not establish comparable restaurant and retail portion prices.
What one reviewer reported about cooking it
Good Housekeeping’s Lisa Futterman tested the fish in an air fryer and a skillet. These are her methods and results, not a substitute for the package’s cooking directions.

Air fryer
Futterman used one thawed fillet, skin-side down, at 400°F. She reported browned glaze after nine minutes. She preferred this approach in part because skillet glaze was difficult to clean up.
Skillet and oven
For her skillet trial, she seared a larger fillet for two minutes, added marinade, then transferred the ovenproof skillet to a 400°F oven. Follow the package instructions for your product and equipment rather than treating either review method as a universal cooking time.

If you want a convenient frozen sablefish with miso marinade, the reported $9.99 price makes the product worth checking at your local Trader Joe’s. If you’re judging whether it reproduces Nobu’s restaurant dish, the available reviews offer subjective impressions rather than a controlled comparison.
