What is confirmed about the revival?
Disney announced the return as a “special event,” rather than confirming an ongoing new season. The special premiered on Disney+ at 12:00 a.m. Pacific / 3:00 a.m. Eastern on February 4, 2026, and aired on ABC at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/Pacific that evening. Disney’s announcement and its February U.S. release calendar identify Sabrina Carpenter as a guest star. Disney’s trailer announcement also names Maya Rudolph as a guest star and Seth Rogen as executive producer and guest star; Alex Timbers is director and executive producer. Credits include 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures.

The special brings Kermit, Miss Piggy and the Muppets ensemble back to the original Muppet Theatre. The original series, created by Jim Henson, ran from 1976 through 1981 and aired in more than 100 countries, according to Disney. Dave Goelz, an original performer, originated Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, among other characters. Disney’s 2021 library announcement said all five seasons of the original series would stream on Disney+; availability can vary by territory and date. Does the public evidence show it was Disney+’s U.S. No. 1?
No public source in the available evidence establishes that ranking. Disney confirms the release and production details, but its announcement does not publish a comparative U.S. viewing rank, a launch-window audience total, or a claim that the special led all Disney+ titles. That means the “most watched” assertion is unverified—not disproved for every date or possible measurement.

To substantiate the claim, a ranking would need to identify who measured it, the period, the metric, the geography and the titles being compared. “Most watched” could mean minutes viewed, starts, viewers or households, and a Disney+ internal ranking is not interchangeable with a third-party chart covering streaming services broadly.
What does Nielsen’s weekly chart actually say?
Nielsen’s displayed U.S. streaming Top 10 for September 14–20, 2026 ranks programs by total minutes viewed among people aged 2 and older. Neagley leads the overall chart with 1,776 million minutes; Bluey ranks eighth with 739 million minutes and is the highest-ranked Disney+ program shown. The Muppet Show does not appear in that week’s Top 10. Nielsen’s chart says its data come from Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings and the Nielsen National TV Panel, covering U.S. viewing through television. Nielsen also notes that provider labels reflect services with program-level data in specific systems, while viewing data include streaming beyond the listed providers.

This is a single week’s overall streaming chart, not a Disney+-only ranking, a historical launch chart, or Disney’s internal title ranking. Its omission cannot establish how the special performed in its opening window or whether it led Disney+ at some other point or by another metric.

The defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline: the revival premiered on Disney+ and ABC, but a U.S. Disney+ most-watched record is not substantiated by the cited public evidence. Disney’s January 2026 announcement recalls that Time called the original series “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth” in 1978. That is a historical description reported by Disney, not a current viewing statistic. Disney’s announcement does not turn it into evidence about 2026 audience rankings.
