But rarity alone does not prove that its value is steadily rising. Recorded auction sales range from $47,000 to $104,000, and the examples differ in mileage, condition, date, and selling venue. The evidence supports a more careful conclusion: some S209s have sold above their original sticker price, but the results do not establish a consistent appreciation trend.
Why the S209 is a rare, distinct STI
Subaru introduced the S209 as the first STI S-line performance car sold in the United States and capped U.S. production at 209 vehicles. That limited run helps explain collector interest, but it does not guarantee a particular resale price or future gain.
The S209 was more than a standard WRX STI with a special badge. Subaru rated its turbocharged 2.5-liter EJ25 horizontally opposed four-cylinder at 341 hp and paired it with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Factory upgrades included a larger turbocharger, engine and fueling changes, an intercooler water-spray system, STI-tuned Bilstein suspension, 19-by-9-inch forged BBS wheels, 265/35R19 tires, Brembo brakes, and carbon-fiber exterior components. These finalized specifications are listed in Subaru’s October 2019 specification release; its earlier introductory material used estimated figures that were later updated.
What the S209 cost new—and what examples have sold for
Subaru announced a 2019 starting MSRP of $63,995, plus $885 for destination and delivery. That is a historical new-car price, not a current valuation. The dated figures below come from distinct sales or valuation sources, so they should not be read as a controlled price series.

Do these prices show that S209 values are increasing?
They show that certain examples have sold for more than the original announced MSRP, including the 139-mile car that brought $104,000 in April 2022. They do not show a dependable upward trajectory: later recorded results include a $75,709 auction sale in 2023 and a $47,000 completed sale listed in March 2026. The observations involve different cars and dates, and a valuation estimate or market benchmark is not the same thing as a completed transaction.
For that reason, it would be misleading to claim that every S209 has appreciated, to calculate a precise appreciation rate from these figures, or to treat the limited production run as a promise of future gains.

How to judge an S209 price
When comparing an asking price, estimate, or completed sale with another S209, match the circumstances as closely as possible. A useful comparison includes:
- Mileage: Low-mileage examples may attract different bids than cars driven regularly.
- Condition: Cosmetic wear, mechanical condition, and evidence of repairs can affect what a buyer is willing to pay.
- Title and accident history: Check for title issues, reported damage, and documented repairs.
- Originality and modifications: Record whether factory components remain in place and what changes have been made.
- Sale date and venue: A completed collector auction, a dealer’s asking price, and a model-based valuation answer different questions.
Keep the type of figure clear: a completed sale records what a buyer paid in that transaction; an estimate models a likely value under stated conditions; and a benchmark summarizes a market reference. None guarantees what a specific car will sell for. KBB’s estimates, for example, were tied to ZIP code 78201 and a validity date, while the cited auction results identify individual cars and sale dates.
