Not in the way the headline suggests. Lithium-bearing clay is associated with the McDermitt Caldera on the Oregon–Nevada border, and reporting describes a possible caldera-scale estimate of 20–40 million metric tons of lithium. But the often-repeated $1.5 trillion figure is a theoretical gross calculation—not a verified reserve, a mine valuation, or evidence that the lithium can all be profitably extracted.
What the $1.5 trillion claim actually measures
Earth.com’s 2026 account links the roughly $1.5 trillion figure to an estimated quantity of lithium and a lithium carbonate price. That kind of multiplication can illustrate the notional scale of a geological claim, but it does not calculate what a mining company could earn or what the material is worth as an investment.
A real project valuation would have to account for how much lithium can be recovered, the costs of mining and processing it, permitting, project timing, environmental obligations, and the effect of bringing additional supply to market. The reviewed sources do not establish a current, defensible market valuation for recoverable lithium across the caldera. Earth.com’s report is secondary reporting on the estimate, not proof of a $1.5 trillion asset.
Where the lithium is—and what “white gold” means
The McDermitt Caldera is a volcanic basin spanning the Oregon–Nevada border. The claim concerns lithium-bearing clay in the basin, not a vein of metallic lithium. Calling it “white gold” is headline shorthand for lithium’s commercial importance; it should not be taken as a description of a ready-to-mine metal deposit.

Earth.com summarizes the geological explanation as volcanic material and hydrothermal fluids supplying lithium to lake sediments, with later alteration producing lithium-bearing clays, including illite. This is a study interpretation conveyed through secondary reporting. The account does not establish that the mineralization was newly discovered or that the entire caldera has been proven as an economically mineable reserve.
How to read the caldera estimate
The possible 20–40 million metric ton figure is reported as a broad estimate associated with the caldera. It is not equivalent to a reserve: a geological estimate does not, by itself, show how much material can be extracted economically under defined operating conditions.

- Geographic scope: The estimate refers broadly to the McDermitt Caldera, not just one permitted or developed mine.
- Classification: It is described in reporting as a possible estimate, not a demonstrated caldera-wide reserve.
- Economic meaning: The figure does not establish recoverability, project costs, or revenue.
- Unit and basis: Do not assume it is directly comparable to project figures reported as lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE); the figures have different stated scopes and bases.
Why Thacker Pass figures are different
Thacker Pass is a defined project within the broader region, and its operator, Lithium Americas, reports separate resource and reserve figures for that project. These company disclosures should not be added to or substituted for the caldera-wide estimate.
| Figure | Scope and classification | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| 20–40 million metric tons of lithium | Possible McDermitt Caldera-scale estimate discussed by Earth.com in 2026 | A reported geological estimate, not a verified recoverable reserve or project valuation. Source |
| 44.5 million tonnes LCE | Thacker Pass measured and indicated mineral resources reported by Lithium Americas as of December 31, 2024 | A project resource; the company cautions that resources outside reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability. Source |
| 14.3 million tonnes LCE | Thacker Pass proven and probable mineral reserves reported by Lithium Americas as of December 31, 2024 | A reserve figure for the defined project, not a caldera-wide inventory. Source |
The Thacker Pass figures are expressed as lithium carbonate equivalent; they should not be compared one-for-one with the reported caldera estimate without matching the units, geographic scope, and classification. Lithium Americas’ project disclosure also explicitly distinguishes resources from reserves: resources that are not reserves do not have demonstrated economic viability.

What is planned at Thacker Pass
Lithium Americas says Phase 1 construction began in March 2023. The company targets mechanical completion in late 2027 and anticipates ramp-up to commercial production through 2028. Those are company targets, not confirmation that production has begun. The project overview lists Phase 1 nominal production capacity of 40,000 tonnes per year; this is planned capacity, not current output. See the company’s project overview.
What the claim does not settle
A large geological estimate does not answer whether a specific mine can be built, operated, and financed, or how its costs and impacts would compare with the value of what it produces. Water, wildlife, cultural sites, and community concerns are relevant to evaluating development, but the cited material does not provide a basis for quantifying site-specific impacts here.

The distinction matters for personal-finance decisions, too: a headline commodity valuation is not a forecast of a company’s revenue, a guarantee of project success, or a basis on its own for estimating an investment’s return. The quoted figures come from different sources and describe different things—an estimate for a geological region, versus operator-reported resources, reserves, and planned project capacity.

Earth.com quotes Sammy Castonguay, identified in the report as a geologist at Treasure Valley Community College: “This feature is 16 million years old, and we’re making decisions in a matter of years.” The remark captures the tension between a long geological history and near-term decisions about development; it does not establish the size of recoverable reserves or the project’s economic outcome. The quotation is reported by Earth.com.
