A September report relayed a cut to its third-quarter delivery estimate and lower gross-margin assumptions; JPMorgan’s longer-term case still rests partly on autonomy and robotics, areas that carry substantial execution and regulatory risks.
What JPMorgan changed—and what it did not
A September 28, 2026 report by TipRanks/TheFly said JPMorgan lowered its Tesla price target from $445 to $415 while keeping its rating at Neutral. An October 2 report by dpa-AFX, republished by MarketScreener, said the bank maintained both the Neutral rating and $415 target. That is a more cautious forecast, not a reported downgrade to a bearish rating. TipRanks/TheFly’s September 28 report and MarketScreener’s October 2 report relay the changes.
A price target is an analyst’s estimate, not a promised future share price. The reports establish the target revision, but without a date-stamped share price they do not establish how much upside or downside JPMorgan saw at either point.
Why the near-term view became more cautious
Lower delivery estimate
The September report said JPMorgan cut its third-quarter delivery estimate from 516,000 vehicles to 482,000. Those figures are the bank’s estimates as relayed by TheFly—not Tesla’s reported deliveries. The report cited weaker-than-expected deliveries in China and the United States. The reviewed coverage does not establish Tesla’s official third-quarter delivery figure, so the estimate cannot be treated as a confirmed result or compared with an actual figure here. TheFly’s account is the source for the estimate and rationale.

Pressure on gross margins
The same report said JPMorgan lowered its gross-margin assumptions, citing raw-material inflation, incentives offered within the quarter, and interest rates. These are reported reasons for the bank’s forecast revision, not proof that Tesla’s realized margin fell by a particular amount. The report does not provide enough detail to quantify the separate effect of each factor.
How that fits with JPMorgan’s longer-term thesis
The near-term caution sits alongside a longer-horizon investment case that is more optimistic about Tesla’s potential. Reuters reported on June 5, 2026, that JPMorgan had upgraded Tesla from Underweight to Neutral and raised its target from $145 to $475. The June target is an earlier forecast, not the latest one: the September report subsequently put the target at $415, and the October report said it remained there. Reuters’ June report, republished by MarketScreener, described the bank’s case.

That June case increasingly depended on autonomy and robotics rather than only vehicle sales. Reuters relayed JPMorgan forecasts of revenue rising from about $95 billion in 2025 to roughly $203 billion by 2030, with earnings per share of roughly $1.95 in 2026 and about $7.50 by 2030. Those are JPMorgan projections reported in June 2026, not realized financial results or guarantees. Reuters also described regulatory, safety-validation, and scaling risks for the autonomy and robotics opportunity.
JPMorgan’s analysts, led by Rajat Gupta, also pointed to Tesla’s integration of hardware and software. Reuters quoted them: “We believe this aspect is still somewhat under-appreciated and misunderstood, but for the sheer starting-point advantage it brings.” That is the analysts’ rationale for part of the longer-term potential; it does not remove the uncertainty around turning that advantage into large-scale, profitable businesses.

What investors can reasonably take from the reports
- Near-term execution matters: the reported reduction in the delivery estimate and margin assumptions signals greater caution about vehicle volume and profitability.
- The Neutral rating is a meaningful qualifier: the September target cut did not, according to the reports, come with a change to a bearish rating, and the October report reaffirmed Neutral.
- The long-term case has a different risk profile: autonomy and robotics may add substantial value in JPMorgan’s projections, but realizing that value depends on regulation, safety validation, and scaling.
- These are analyst views, not company results: the September figures were relayed secondhand, and the reviewed reports do not establish Tesla’s official third-quarter delivery number.
For a personal-finance decision, the reports are best read as a split signal: weaker near-term assumptions alongside a Neutral stance and a longer-term thesis that relies on uncertain future businesses. They do not by themselves settle whether Tesla shares suit a particular investor, time horizon, or risk tolerance.
