Why cash spending and the PP&E increase are not the same thing
Cash purchases are a flow measured over a period: they record spending, subject to the cash-flow statement’s definitions. PP&E on a balance sheet is a stock: the net carrying value of assets at a particular date. It is not a running total of cash spent. To reconcile the two, one would need period-matched details of additions, payment timing, depreciation, asset retirements or sales, and other accounting effects.

What Tesla’s balance sheet reports
Tesla reported PP&E, net, of $35.836 billion on December 31, 2024, compared with $29.725 billion on December 31, 2023. These are net carrying values at two year-end dates; they are neither gross asset costs nor a second-half cash-spending total. Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K
The filing says PP&E, including leasehold improvements, is recorded at cost less accumulated depreciation. When an asset is retired or sold, its cost and related accumulated depreciation are removed from the consolidated balance sheet. Maintenance and repairs are expensed; qualifying major improvements are capitalized and depreciated over their useful lives. These accounting rules help explain why cash spent on assets need not match the change in net PP&E, but they do not, on their own, establish what accounts for the reported $1.4 billion difference.

Possible explanations are not a reconciliation
Futurism attributes to Wharton accounting professor Luzi Hail possible factors including asset sales or disposals, mergers and acquisitions, and foreign-currency transactions. These are potential accounting mechanisms, not verified explanations for this particular comparison. Tesla’s filing says that foreign subsidiaries with a non-US-dollar functional currency translate balance sheets using month-end exchange rates, with translation adjustments reflected in other comprehensive income. What the auditor’s opinion does—and does not—say
Tesla’s independent auditor gave an opinion that the company’s consolidated financial statements presented fairly, in all material respects, its financial position as of December 31, 2024 and 2023, as well as its operating results and cash flows for the three years ended December 31, 2024, under US generally accepted accounting principles. The auditor also said it audited internal control over financial reporting. What can be concluded
The reported figures raise a question about how the second-half cash-spending and PP&E measures compare, but the Financial Times article body is registration-gated and the available disclosures do not provide a transaction-level, second-half reconciliation of the headline calculation.
