The claim that South India is outperforming the rest of the country “in almost all fields” is best read as a broad argument, not a current, universal ranking. The evidence cited by data scientist Nilakantan RS points to strong performance on measures such as income and human development, but the answer changes with the indicator, year, states compared and method used.
What claim is the headline making?
The headline refers to an October 3, 2022, Scroll excerpt from Nilakantan RS’s book South vs North: India’s Great Divide. The excerpt says all five southern states were among India’s ten richest large states in 2018–19. That is a specific, dated income comparison; it does not establish that each southern state leads on every measure today. Read the Scroll excerpt.
“Rich” also depends on what is being counted. Per-capita income, a state’s total economic output, health outcomes, education and a composite human-development index answer different questions. A region can rank strongly on one and less strongly on another.
What do the available comparisons show?
Income and the size of the regional economy
Scroll’s 2018–19 claim concerns the relative prosperity of large states, not a present-day ranking across every field. Separately, the Associated Press reported in 2024 that the five southern states together represented roughly 20% of India’s population and 30% of its economy. Those regional shares describe the south’s aggregate scale; they are not per-person income figures and should not be treated as the same comparison as Scroll’s state ranking. Associated Press report.

Human development
The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) reports traditional state HDI values for 2021–22 of 0.75 for Kerala, 0.69 for Tamil Nadu and 0.67 for Karnataka. Its same table gives Himachal Pradesh 0.70 and Haryana 0.69. These values show high results for some southern states, while also showing that comparisons with other states are not a simple regional sweep. The cited figures are from CSEP’s 2025 report and refer to its traditional HDI measure, not a quality-adjusted index. CSEP, India’s Human Development.
Global Data Lab’s subnational HDI series includes health, education, income and composite dimensions and displays India’s total HDI as 0.685 for 2023. That is a national value, not a ranking for South India. The series is useful for seeing the dimensions and years involved, but it should not be conflated with CSEP’s state table or presented as a regional score. Why no single score settles the question
- Indicator: State income per person, total economic output and HDI measure different things; a ranking on one cannot stand in for the others.
- Year: The evidence spans 2018–19 income, 2021–22 HDI, a Global Data Lab series through 2023 and 2024 reporting on regional economic shares. These are not a synchronized snapshot.
- Geography: “South India” here means five states in the regional reporting, while individual-state comparisons can look different. Regional aggregates can conceal differences among states.
- Index construction and distribution: Traditional and quality-adjusted HDI are distinct measures. Any average or composite can also obscure inequality within a state.
Nilakantan RS writes in the Scroll excerpt, “The distance between the rich and poor states, nevertheless, has widened.” That observation is about a widening gap, not proof that every southern state has advanced equally or that a single policy explains the divergence. The available comparisons support a case for strong southern performance on several measures, but do not provide a comprehensive causal test of why gaps developed.

For a useful state-to-state comparison, pair each claim with its indicator, year, source and geographic definition. Treat a regional share of national output as different from an income-per-person ranking, and treat any HDI result as specific to the index version used. With those distinctions in view, the headline captures a broad pattern of southern strength, while “almost all fields” should not be taken literally as a verified current ranking across every outcome.
