The music-publishers’ lawsuit settled in September 2021. That case is separate from other litigation Roblox has faced since.
Where the $200 million figure came from
On June 9, 2021, music publishers and related plaintiffs filed ABKCO Music, Inc. et al. v. Roblox Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Case 2:21-cv-04705). The complaint alleged copyright infringement involving music used on Roblox. Those claims were allegations, not findings by a court. Read the complaint.
In its request for relief, the plaintiffs sought statutory copyright damages or, alternatively, actual damages including Roblox’s profits, with the amount to be established at trial. They asked for “in all events, in an amount of no less than $200 million.” That is the source of the headline: a minimum amount the plaintiffs requested, not an amount a court ruled Roblox owed. Contemporary reporting identified the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) as the trade association behind the suit and described the plaintiffs as music publishers. Contemporary coverage of the filing.
How the lawsuit ended
The NMPA and Roblox settled in September 2021. Contemporary reporting described an opt-in arrangement under which NMPA members could negotiate individual music-licensing deals. The cited accounts do not report a $200 million settlement payment, so the complaint’s requested damages should not be treated as evidence that Roblox paid that amount. Settlement financial terms are not established by those reports. Reporting on the settlement.

Does Roblox still face lawsuits?
Yes. The settlement closed the 2021 music-publishers case; it did not mean Roblox had no other litigation. Separate matters include a securities class action filed June 8, 2026, and child-safety multidistrict litigation. Those cases involve different claims and should not be conflated with the settled music-copyright suit. Information on separate litigation.
Another distinct copyright case, Beaulier v. Roblox Corporation, had a motion to dismiss granted in an order filed October 2, 2026. That procedural outcome belongs to that case, not the 2021 publishers’ lawsuit. Legal dockets can change, so a case’s status should be checked against its own docket for the date in question. Information on the separate copyright case.
