Those are VGChartz estimates reported by Icon Era, not official unit totals published by Microsoft.
What the latest worldwide comparison says
Icon Era’s September 1, 2026 comparison reports VGChartz estimates of 94.09 million PS5 units and 35.21 million Xbox Series X|S units sold to consumers through July 2026. Dividing the PS5 estimate by the Xbox estimate gives roughly 2.7 to 1. The five-to-one claim is therefore not supported by these figures. Icon Era’s PS5 vs Xbox Series X sales comparison
The comparison’s 72.7% figure for PS5 refers to its share of the two platforms’ combined estimated sales in June 2026. It excludes Nintendo hardware, so it is not PS5’s share of the entire console market. Icon Era’s comparison and estimates
Why reported totals can differ
Consumer sales estimates and official shipments measure different things
The VGChartz figures are estimates of consumer purchases, extrapolated from retail sampling, according to Icon Era. Sony’s official number uses a different basis: its FY2026 Q1 supplemental information reports 93.7 million cumulative PS5 sell-in units as of March 31, 2026, and says hardware units are disclosed on a sell-in basis. Sell-in counts shipments into retail channels, not necessarily consoles already purchased by consumers. Icon Era’s explanation of the comparison method; Sony FY2026 Q1 supplemental information

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Icon Era also reports Sony’s PS5 shipment figure as 95.3 million through June 30, 2026. That later figure is still a shipment measure. It should not be divided by the Xbox consumer-sales estimate to create a like-for-like ratio. Icon Era’s comparison
Microsoft does not provide a comparable unit total in the cited source
Icon Era says Microsoft reports changes in Xbox hardware revenue rather than console unit totals. That means the Xbox number in this comparison is an estimate attributed to VGChartz, not a Microsoft-confirmed lifetime sales figure. Read the 2.7-to-1 result as a same-source, same-period estimated comparison—not an audited tally. Icon Era’s comparison

A strong US month does not change the worldwide lifetime comparison
In Circana data for the United States, Xbox Series X|S unit sales rose 86% year over year in June 2026, while PS5 unit sales fell 43%. GameSpot reported that Xbox’s increase followed a weak comparison month affected by a May 2025 price increase. These are changes in one country over one month, not global cumulative totals, so they do not replace the worldwide comparison through July. GameSpot’s report on Circana’s June 2026 US console data

How to read the headline claim
- For estimated consumer sales: the cited worldwide comparison is about 2.7 to 1 through July 2026.
- For Sony-reported shipments: Sony’s official figure is 93.7 million sell-in units as of March 31, 2026; Icon Era reports 95.3 million shipped through June 30, 2026.
- For an official Xbox unit count: the cited source does not provide one from Microsoft, so the Xbox lifetime figure remains an estimate in this comparison.
