A separate Premium Economy cabin can offer a wider seat and additional services; an extra-legroom seat in the economy cabin is a different product. Compare what your itinerary actually includes with the extra cost over a comparable economy ticket—there is no single upgrade price or universal value verdict for U.S. flights.
First, check what “premium economy” means on your flight
U.S. airlines do not use the label for one standardized experience. American Premium Economy and Delta Premium Select are distinct cabin products. By contrast, American Main Cabin Extra and Alaska Premium Class are economy-cabin seats with additional space or other benefits; they should not be treated as equivalent to a separate premium cabin.
American itself distinguishes Premium Economy, described as offering more space and amenities on select long-distance international and domestic flights, from Main Cabin Extra, which offers more legroom in Main Cabin plus early boarding. American’s travel-experience comparison makes that distinction explicit.
What the major products offer—and what varies
American Premium Economy
American says its separate Premium Economy cabin is available on select international and domestic flights aboard 777-300s, 787-8s flying internationally and to Alaska, 787-9s, and 777-200s. Its listed features include wider adjustable seats with extra legroom, priority airport privileges, chef-inspired dining, personal on-demand entertainment, larger monitors, noise-reducing headphones, Wi-Fi and seat power. Complimentary beer, wine and spirits depend on full drink service; amenity kits and bedding are limited to international flights and select flights to or from Los Angeles and New York. American describes the bedding as an Ostrichpillow lumbar pillow and crepe-weave blanket. These are the airline’s product descriptions, not independent findings about passenger satisfaction. American’s 2025 JFK–LAX example
American announced Premium Economy on selected flights between New York’s JFK and Los Angeles International Airport beginning October 5, 2025—not on every departure between the cities. The announced service included priority check-in, security and boarding; wider seats and more legroom; an amenity kit, lumbar pillow and blanket; complimentary drinks; a hot meal with salad and dessert served on chinaware; in-seat power; and larger monitors with noise-reducing headphones. American’s announcement quoted Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden describing the intended comfort and dining improvements; that is the airline’s statement, not proof that the fare is worth its price.
Delta Premium Select
Delta describes Premium Select as a spacious seat with an adjustable footrest and leg rest, more recline, elevated dining and premium amenities. The airline cautions that layouts and onboard amenities vary by aircraft, and that fares, fees, rules and offers can change. Ticket tier also matters. In a May 15, 2025 announcement, Delta said updated product names and experience tiers would apply to flights originating in the U.S. and Canada on or after October 1, 2025. Delta Comfort replaced the Comfort+ name, while Delta Premium Select remained a distinct product. Delta said Main Basic, Classic and Extra differ in areas including seat assignment, boarding, cancellation value, same-day standby and mileage earning; other seat products would also have Classic and Extra experiences, with Refundable options in some markets. Alaska Premium Class
Alaska’s Premium Class is an extra-legroom economy product, not the same kind of separate cabin as American Premium Economy or Delta Premium Select. Alaska currently lists four additional inches of legroom over Main Cabin, early boarding, reserved overhead-bin access, and complimentary beer, wine and cocktails on most flights over 350 miles. Device streaming is available on some aircraft and seatback screens on others; food pre-order is available on most flights over 670 miles. Check the route and aircraft for the applicable amenities. United’s official seat-options comparison identifies Premium Plus as an international-only option in part of its comparison. Detailed inclusions and U.S. domestic availability could not be verified from the official page, so do not assume a particular domestic itinerary offers it or infer a benefits list from the name. There is no established representative 2025 U.S. fare premium or matched set of live fares that supports a national average. A useful decision depends on the incremental price for your own dates and itinerary, plus the value you place on the actual seat, included services and fare rules.

- Identify the product. Confirm whether the booking is for a separate premium cabin or an extra-legroom seat within economy.
- Check every segment. Verify the operating carrier, route, scheduled aircraft and seat map. A cabin may be offered only on selected flights, and connecting flights may not have the same product.
- Confirm the inclusions. On the booking details for your itinerary, look for priority services, baggage, meals, drinks, bedding, power, entertainment and connectivity. Treat general airline product pages as descriptions, not guarantees for every flight.
- Read the fare rules. Check seat-selection terms, change and cancellation options, refundability, same-day standby and mileage earning for the ticket tier you are considering.
- Compare the full price difference. Compare the premium option with the best economy alternative you would actually buy, including relevant add-ons. Then decide whether the specific seat and services justify that extra amount for this trip.
Airline feature lists do not establish a controlled cross-carrier ranking, passenger satisfaction result or universal upgrade value. Use the exact itinerary and fare rather than choosing by cabin name alone.
