Peter Thiel said he was considering cryonic preservation after death through Alcor, according to a 2023 report by Futurism. He described the idea as “more as an ideological statement” and said, “I don’t necessarily expect it to work.” That distinction matters: Alcor offers preservation services, but says preserving a person is not reversible with current technology.
What did Peter Thiel say about cryonics?
In a 2023 conversation with journalist Bari Weiss on her Honestly podcast, Thiel discussed the possibility of cryonic preservation after death. Futurism reported that he was considering Alcor and quoted him saying: “I think of it more as an ideological statement.” He added, “I don’t necessarily expect it to work,” followed by, “but I think it’s the sort of thing we’re supposed to try to do.”
Those remarks indicate a stated interest and an attitude toward the idea; they do not establish that Thiel has enrolled with Alcor, made arrangements, or will undergo preservation. The provider detail and quotations here are attributed to Futurism’s report.
Does cryonics currently bring people back to life?
No demonstrated human revival is established by the sources cited here. Alcor’s FAQ says: “Cryopreservation of people is not reversible with current technology and is only practiced following pronouncement of legal death.” The future restoration of preserved people is an aspiration, not a proven outcome.
Alcor’s procedures page quotes cryonics advocate Dr. Ralph Merkle as saying, “Cryonics is an experiment. So far the control group isn’t doing very well.” That is a quip about the inevitability of death, not clinical evidence that cryonics can revive people.
How does Alcor say its preservation process works?
Alcor says human cryopreservation begins only after legal death has been declared. Its description of the process includes stabilization and cooling, surgical access to the circulatory system, circulation of cryoprotectant, controlled cooling, and long-term storage in liquid nitrogen.
The aim of cryoprotectants and controlled cooling is vitrification: a glass-like state with little to no ice, rather than ordinary freezing. This is the provider’s explanation of its procedure, not evidence that preserved people can later be restored.
What are Alcor’s two preservation options?
Alcor describes two pathways. Its currently listed funding figures are organization-published amounts, not independent estimates or a guarantee that every cost in a particular case is covered. The figures below are listed by Alcor as of October 8, 2026.
Rank #3
| Option | What Alcor says is preserved | Provider’s stated restoration premise | Alcor-listed funding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-body preservation | The whole anatomy | Future medical restoration of the preserved person | $220,000 whole-body funding — Alcor Life Extension Foundation, 2026 |
| Neuropreservation | The brain | A healthy body would need to be available in the future | $80,000 neuropreservation funding — Alcor Life Extension Foundation, 2026 |
These are descriptions of Alcor’s offerings and rationale. The available sources do not establish that either pathway has a proven revival advantage.
What does Alcor currently report about its size?
Alcor’s press page currently lists these organization-published figures, accessed October 8, 2026:
- 1,500+ members — Alcor Life Extension Foundation, 2026
- 250+ patients in care — Alcor Life Extension Foundation, 2026
- Service in 28 countries — Alcor Life Extension Foundation, 2026
These are operational counts reported by the organization. Membership and patients in care are not evidence that preservation succeeds or that revival is possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does Alcor describe payment and member arrangements?
Alcor’s FAQ says it accepts individual life insurance as a funding method and describes policy-rating and beneficiary or assignment requirements. It also says members receive identification items provided by the organization. Those are Alcor’s stated arrangements, not general financial advice or a recommendation to purchase a policy.
