Short answer: Nike’s latest results show a business still in reset, not a proven recovery. Its fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue fell, and management expects revenue to decline further this year. There is a recovery case—particularly if performance products gain traction and the company improves its weaker businesses—but these results alone cannot establish whether NKE is attractively priced: a dated share price and valuation comparison are essential. That makes a categorical “buy now” or “disaster” verdict unjustified.
What Nike’s latest results say about the business
In results released October 1, 2026, NIKE, Inc. reported fiscal Q1 2027 revenue of $11.2 billion, down 4% from the year-earlier quarter on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. Diluted earnings per share were $0.48. Currency-neutral growth is a company-presented non-GAAP comparison that excludes the effect of foreign exchange; it is not the reported revenue result.
The picture differed sharply by market and channel. North America revenue grew 2% reported, while Greater China fell 22% reported and 26% currency-neutral. Converse revenue declined 28% on both reported and currency-neutral bases. NIKE Direct revenue—which includes Nike-owned stores and digital sales—fell 8% reported and 9% currency-neutral. Digital sales were down 13%, and sales at Nike-owned stores were down 5%.
One positive result was gross margin: it increased 60 basis points year over year to 42.8%, primarily because of lower warehousing and logistics costs. That is encouraging for profitability, but it does not reverse the revenue declines. In the same quarter, revenue and net income were lower year over year.

The annual backdrop is also mixed. For fiscal 2026, Nike reported $46.4 billion in revenue, flat year over year on a reported basis and down 2% currency-neutral. Net income was $3.1 billion, down 3%, and diluted EPS was $2.10, also down 3%. The next quarter’s results and the company’s current-year outlook point to continued pressure, rather than a recovery already visible across the business.
Why an investor might see a recovery opportunity
Nike remains a global footwear and apparel company selling through both wholesale partners and its own retail and digital channels. Its scale and brand portfolio leave room for improvement if product demand, distribution, and execution strengthen. That is a possible investment thesis—not evidence that improvement is certain or that the shares are a bargain.
CEO Elliott Hill said on October 1 that the “Sport Offense” was driving measurable progress in Nike’s performance business. He also acknowledged more work was needed in NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand, and Greater China. The distinction matters: management described progress in one part of the business while naming other areas still needing repair. The statement is management’s assessment, not independent confirmation that a turnaround is working.

Nike also introduced Pace, a restructuring and cost-savings program. The company estimates approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through fiscal 2031, before charges and any future reinvestment, and expects approximately $1.0 billion in cumulative pretax charges through that period. Nike cautions that actual savings and charges may differ materially. Investors should therefore assess the program by what it delivers after implementation costs, not treat the savings estimate as guaranteed profit.

The clearest near-term concern is management’s own forecast: Nike expects fiscal 2027 revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage. It forecasts adjusted diluted EPS of $1.15 to $1.35, excluding approximately $0.15 of Pace restructuring expense. This is a company outlook, not a promise; adjusted EPS is a non-GAAP measure and should not be confused with reported GAAP earnings.
Weakness is not confined to one line item. China, Converse, and Nike Direct all contracted in the latest quarter, while digital sales fell faster than store sales. Nike’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K describes demand as sensitive to design trends and changing consumer preferences. If products or brand assortments do not match what customers want, lower demand can weigh on sales and profitability.

Margins also need context. The latest improvement primarily reflected lower logistics and warehousing costs, while Nike cited markdowns and channel mix as pressures on average selling prices. A higher gross margin in one quarter is useful evidence, but investors should look for durable improvement alongside healthy demand and less reliance on discounting.
Other risks identified in Nike’s filings include tariffs, foreign currency, geopolitics, and tax developments, any of which can affect consumers or profitability. Pace adds execution risk: restructuring may take time, incur costs, and produce different results from the company’s estimates.
Why the share price is necessary to answer “buy now”
A company can be recovering and still be a poor investment if its shares already price in too much optimism. Conversely, a struggling company may be worth considering at a sufficiently low price if an investor believes its future cash flows justify that price. Operating results describe the business; valuation connects those results to what an investor would pay.

The official stock-information page available for this assessment did not provide a dated October 5, 2026 share price. Without a dated quote, there is no sound basis here to state NKE’s current price-to-earnings ratio, dividend yield, upside target, or margin of safety—or to call the stock cheap or expensive. Before making a valuation judgment, use a market quote with its date, time, and currency, then label the earnings denominator clearly. Trailing reported GAAP EPS, adjusted historical EPS, and management’s forecast adjusted EPS are not interchangeable.
For a comparison with another investment, use consistent measures: the same quote date and currency, comparable earnings definitions and periods, and a clear distinction between reported and adjusted figures. Also weigh sales and earnings direction, margin quality, regional performance, channel mix, guidance credibility, balance-sheet and cash-return context, and your own time horizon and ability to absorb losses. A multiple based on forecast adjusted earnings should not be compared with a trailing GAAP multiple without explaining the difference.

| Choice | It may fit if… | What to accept or verify |
|---|---|---|
| Consider a measured purchase | You have independently checked a dated share price and believe the valuation leaves room for the risks, while your thesis does not depend on an immediate rebound. | You must be willing to tolerate further operating weakness and reassess if the recovery conditions you rely on fail. |
| Wait for more evidence | You want to see whether performance-business momentum spreads and the troubled markets or channels stabilize before taking exposure. | The share price could rise or fall while you wait; confirmation may arrive only after some uncertainty has already cleared. |
| Pass or keep exposure limited | Your investment plan cannot accommodate uncertain turnaround timing, or your valuation work does not support the price you would pay. | Missing a recovery is possible, just as avoiding a prolonged decline is possible. The choice should fit your portfolio rather than a headline prediction. |
What to monitor in the next results
For investors following Nike’s reset, the next reports can help test whether the business is improving in ways that matter to the thesis. Focus on:
- Greater China: whether the steep reported and currency-neutral declines moderate, and whether any change is sustained.
- Direct and digital sell-through: whether owned-channel sales stabilize and whether digital performance improves rather than continuing to lag.
- Wholesale and channel balance: whether wholesale contributes to healthier growth without simply shifting sales between channels.
- Inventory, markdowns, and average selling prices: whether demand is clearing products with less discounting pressure.
- Gross-margin quality: whether improvement continues and what is driving it, including the balance between cost savings, pricing, and product mix.
- Pace execution: whether realized savings emerge over time and how charges compare with the company’s estimates.
- Guidance versus reported results: whether actual performance tracks, exceeds, or falls short of management’s fiscal 2027 outlook.
Bottom line
Nike is neither a demonstrably successful turnaround nor a business whose future can be declared a disaster from one quarter. The latest evidence supports a cautious, conditional view: a recovery thesis is possible, but revenue is falling, management expects another difficult year, and key businesses remain weak. Whether buying NKE now makes sense depends on a properly dated share price, a clearly defined valuation measure, and your ability to bear the risks—not on the brand name or the possibility of a rebound alone.
