Is Microsoft Ditching OpenAI? What Its AI Chief’s Plan Really Means

Microsoft’s AI chief says the company is pursuing its own frontier models. That signals diversification, not an announced end to its OpenAI partnership.

Microsoft is building its own frontier AI models, but it has not announced an end to its OpenAI partnership. The reported remarks behind the “plan to ditch OpenAI” headline describe a push for greater independence in AI research—not a completed exit. Microsoft’s revised agreement with OpenAI preserves major commercial ties, and CEO Satya Nadella said in July 2026 that the company felt good about the partnership.

What did Microsoft’s AI chief say?

In a February 2026 interview with the Financial Times, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said the company needed to develop its own frontier foundation models. Windows Central reported his comment that Microsoft must build those models with top training teams and large-scale computing resources. That quotation is available through secondary coverage; the original Financial Times interview was not directly reviewed.

In a June 2026 interview reported by VentureBeat, Suleyman said Microsoft had been “set free” from its contract with OpenAI about six months earlier to formally pursue superintelligence. His point was that Microsoft could pursue its own advanced-model ambitions. That does not establish that the company had decided to end the broader partnership.

Is Microsoft ending its OpenAI partnership?

No end to the partnership has been announced in the available statements. The clearest account of what changed came from Microsoft’s April 27, 2026 announcement of amended terms. The arrangement loosened some ties while retaining others:

Part of the relationship What Microsoft said changed or continues
Cloud partnership Microsoft remained OpenAI’s primary cloud partner. OpenAI products were to ship first on Azure, subject to Microsoft’s ability and choice to support the necessary capabilities; OpenAI could also serve products across other cloud providers.
OpenAI intellectual property Microsoft retained a license to OpenAI IP through 2032, but the license became non-exclusive.
Revenue sharing Microsoft stopped paying OpenAI a revenue share. OpenAI continued paying Microsoft through 2030, subject to an overall cap.
Ownership Microsoft said it remained a major shareholder in OpenAI.

These terms show a partnership that changed, not one that was publicly terminated. In July 2026, Nadella said, “Overall, we feel good about our partnership with OpenAI.” He also said Microsoft planned to use its access to OpenAI IP through 2032 and cited customer demand for model variety as one reason the relationship had evolved.

Why is Microsoft building its own AI models?

Developing its own models gives Microsoft more control over its AI research and product options. It has described work on its MAI model family, while also presenting access to outside models as part of its offering. Building in-house models can therefore reduce reliance on any single provider without requiring Microsoft to stop using OpenAI’s models.

Microsoft has described its cloud model catalog as containing more than 11,000 models. That is a company-reported catalog figure, not an independent count. Microsoft also said that the number of customers building with models from multiple providers had increased fivefold since the start of 2026; that comparison is likewise Microsoft’s own report.

Does Microsoft still use OpenAI models?

Microsoft’s public examples indicate that OpenAI models remain among the options it uses and offers, alongside models from other providers and its own MAI family. In March 2026, Axios reported that Copilot Researcher used OpenAI and Anthropic models, including a Claude critique layer. A July earnings-call transcript described a model catalog spanning OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, xAI and Microsoft’s MAI models.

Those examples demonstrate a multi-model approach, not a complete removal of OpenAI from Microsoft products. The reviewed sources do not establish a precise current measure of Microsoft’s dependence on OpenAI.

What “ditch OpenAI” gets wrong—and what it captures

The phrase captures a real strategic shift: Microsoft is investing in its own frontier models and is no longer bound to an exclusive OpenAI IP license. It overstates the evidence if read to mean Microsoft has left the partnership. Cloud, licensing, revenue and ownership links remained under the amended terms, and Nadella publicly endorsed the relationship in July 2026.

For readers trying to understand the practical change, the key distinction is between building alternatives and ending a partnership. Microsoft has clearly described the first; its announced terms and executive statements do not support the second.
