The U.S. Air Force confirmed in December 2025 that it was acquiring two Boeing 747-8s, and an Air Force official identified Lufthansa as the seller. Lufthansa’s 2025 annual report says it had an opportunity to sell two of the aircraft in 2026. The reported $400 million purchase is for training and spare-parts support—not for the new Air Force One aircraft.
What is the Air Force buying, and why?
The Air Force said the two aircraft would support training and spares for its future 747-8 fleet. The service also said it needed an overall training and sustainment strategy for that fleet. Reuters reported that the 747-8i is out of production and differs significantly from the older 747-200 aircraft, making a dedicated support plan important.
The purchase is an additional support acquisition for the Air Force’s 747-8 fleet. It is not part of the two-aircraft contract to modify Boeing 747-8s for presidential service. Breaking Defense and Reuters reported the acquisition and its purpose.
How much did the Air Force pay?
The reported acquisition price was $400 million for both aircraft, according to the U.S. Air Force statement reported by Breaking Defense in December 2025; Reuters reported the same total. That figure applies to the Lufthansa aircraft pair, not the separate presidential-aircraft contract.

What does Lufthansa say about the sale?
Lufthansa’s 2025 annual report says the group had an opportunity to sell two Boeing 747-8s in 2026 on attractive conditions. It adds that the aircraft would be replaced by more efficient types, continuing the reduction of the group’s four-engine fleet. The quoted annual-report passage does not identify the buyer; the connection to the Air Force comes from Air Force confirmation and reporting that identifies Lufthansa as the seller.
Are these the new Air Force One aircraft?
No. The Lufthansa aircraft are separate from the two VC-25Bs that Boeing is modifying for presidential service. The Air Force described the Lufthansa purchase as additive to the VC-25B program and intended for training and spares. Reuters reported that Boeing received a separate $3.9 billion fixed-price contract in 2018 for the two modified presidential aircraft; that is not the price of the Lufthansa pair.

A separate former Qatari 747 has also been used in the interim presidential-aircraft effort. The Associated Press reported in May 2026 that it had been modified and tested for temporary presidential use, while the Boeing aircraft were then expected in 2028. That aircraft is distinct from both the Lufthansa support jets and the two VC-25Bs.

In December 2025, reports projected that the first aircraft would arrive in early 2026 and the second before the end of that year. Those were forecasts at the time, not current delivery dates. A later report by Air Data News says the first aircraft, D-ABYD, flew to the United States in January for training, and that the second, D-ABYG, left Frankfurt for Pinal Airpark in Arizona on September 26, 2026. The report says D-ABYG was intended for the spares pool.

Those aircraft-specific roles and movements are secondary reporting. The cited September report establishes the second aircraft’s departure from Frankfurt, but does not establish its later delivery, induction, or modification status.
