Las Vegas is not building a confirmed $12 billion airport. The proposal for a Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport is still in federal environmental review, and official records reviewed for this article do not substantiate the $12 billion figure. Construction would depend on a favorable federal decision and Clark County choosing to proceed.
What is the proposed Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport?
The Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA) is a proposed airport intended to add airfield capacity for commercial and general aviation in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It is a proposal, not an operating airport or a confirmed construction project.
Where does the project stand?
The proposal is undergoing a new federal environmental review, including an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and an amendment to the Bureau of Land Management’s Resource Management Plan. The Department of Transportation said in its 2025 Federal Register notice that agencies cancelled the suspended EIS process that began in 2006 and initiated a new review.
That distinction matters when reading agency project pages. The BLM project record displays a June 12, 2026 final EIS publication date. But the newer process record describes a replacement review, while the federal Permitting Dashboard lists a draft EIS target in 2027. The BLM entry should not be taken as evidence that the current review is complete.

What is the federal review schedule?
The Permitting Dashboard currently lists these target dates for the active review:
| Review milestone | Dashboard target |
|---|---|
| Draft Environmental Impact Statement | November 5, 2027 |
| Final Environmental Impact Statement | August 11, 2028 |
| Record of Decision | October 26, 2028 |
These are agency schedule targets, not guaranteed completion dates. They concern environmental review; they are not construction start or airport opening dates.

Would the airport definitely be built?
No. Clark County may elect to proceed with construction if the federal review produces a favorable Record of Decision, according to the County’s FY2025 annual comprehensive financial report. A favorable decision would therefore be a condition for moving forward, not a guarantee that construction will happen.
The County report also describes 17,000 acres of surrounding land as contingent on a favorable decision and the airport proceeding. It does not say that this land has already been conveyed or developed. The report says the Department cannot estimate the airport’s effect on its revenues and expenses.

Is the airport really expected to cost $12 billion?
The $12 billion figure appears in the supplied headline, but the official records reviewed do not confirm it as a project cost estimate. They also do not establish final financing. It should not be treated as an adopted construction budget or a settled amount taxpayers or travelers will pay.
