Switching from Verizon to T-Mobile can be worth it if T-Mobile works well where you use your phone and your all-in costs are lower after device balances, lost discounts, perks, and home-internet bundles. T-Mobile is often the stronger choice for broad 5G availability and typical 5G performance; Verizon may be better for LTE reach, rural routes, or locations where its signal is more reliable. There is no universal winner: compare your actual Verizon bill with a specific T-Mobile quote and test coverage at home, work, and along your regular routes before moving your number.
Who is more likely to benefit from switching?
| Your situation | Likely better fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You want broad 5G availability and strong typical 5G performance | T-Mobile may be a better fit | Signal and congestion at your regular locations |
| You still owe money on Verizon phones | T-Mobile may be a better fit if you qualify for Keep and Switch | Device eligibility, payoff amount, documentation, and reimbursement timing |
| You travel or live in rural areas where LTE matters | Verizon may be a better fit | Coverage along the specific roads and destinations you use |
| You have a legacy Verizon plan, free lines, or valuable bill credits | Staying may be better | Whether a new plan or carrier would forfeit existing benefits |
| You use a lot of hotspot data or travel internationally | It depends on the plan tier | Compare allowances, speeds, countries, and restrictions—not just “unlimited” labels |
| You bundle wireless with home internet | It depends on the combined bill | Include any lost home-internet discount in the calculation |
Do not compare entry-level unlimited service with a premium plan as though they were equivalent. Compare the data priority, hotspot, international use, video quality, device offers, and included perks you actually need.
Compare the real monthly cost, not the advertised rate
Your current Verizon bill is the right baseline—not the price of a new Verizon plan advertised to new customers. Make a line-by-line comparison that includes both recurring and one-time costs.
- Plan price for your line count and any AutoPay or multiline discounts.
- Taxes, regulatory fees, and carrier surcharges. T-Mobile says eligible Go5G/Experience-style plans include taxes and regulatory fees, while Essentials may add fees; its displayed plan disclosure lists a $4.49-per-voice-line Regulatory Programs Fee and Telco Recovery Fee, subject to change. Check the quote for your plan. T-Mobile plan details.
- Device installments, insurance, and optional perks.
- Verizon promotional credits you would lose by leaving or changing plans.
- Hotspot and international features you would otherwise need to buy.
- Any lost home-internet discount and the value of perks you would genuinely use.
- One-time charges. T-Mobile’s referenced postpaid join flow lists a $35-per-line device connection charge; confirm the current charge in your order summary. T-Mobile joining information.
Eligible T-Mobile plans with taxes and regulatory fees included can make bills more predictable, but that does not mean every plan or charge is included. Verizon likewise notes that plan perks, taxes, fees, and surcharges can change; verify what the Simplicity quote includes. Verizon plan information.

Use a two- or three-year comparison
A low introductory rate or device offer can look attractive in the first month and lose value later. Calculate total costs over the period you expect to stay, using the standard rate after any temporary offer ends and accounting for promotional credits only for as long as you remain eligible.
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Current Verizon monthly bill, excluding costs that will end regardless | $____ |
| Quoted T-Mobile monthly bill with the same lines and needed features | $____ |
| Monthly difference | $____ |
| Value of Verizon discounts, credits, and bundle savings lost | $____ |
| Value of T-Mobile benefits you would otherwise pay for | $____ |
| One-time switching costs and device payoff timing | $____ |
| Net first-year savings (or added cost) | $____ |
| Net second- or third-year savings (or added cost) | $____ |
Count a streaming subscription or travel perk at its retail price only if you would otherwise pay for it. A listed benefit you do not use has little or no practical value.
Network: 5G reach and LTE coverage are different questions
The FCC’s 2025 analysis of 2024 coverage data found Verizon and AT&T had superior LTE coverage at the analyzed 5/1 Mbps threshold compared with T-Mobile and UScellular combined in most analyzed states. In the same analysis, T-Mobile and UScellular combined had superior 5G coverage at the 7/1 Mbps threshold in all analyzed states. Those results describe specific coverage data and states; they do not predict service in every neighborhood. FCC 2025 coverage analysis.
That distinction matters if your phone often falls back to LTE, especially on rural roads or indoors. T-Mobile may offer broader 5G availability, while Verizon can retain an LTE-reach advantage in some areas. Neither a national map nor a speed ranking guarantees reception in a basement, workplace, school, or particular stretch of highway.

Test the places that matter to you
- Check both carriers’ coverage maps for your home, workplace, school, commute, and frequent travel destinations.
- Where possible, try T-Mobile with a trial, temporary line, or one-line test before porting the whole household.
- Test calls, texts, data, and hotspot indoors and at busy times—not only outdoors at midday.
- Ask people who use T-Mobile at the exact locations you care about, while remembering that their phone and plan may differ.
Independent testing does not produce one universal winner. T-Mobile has generally been strongest in 5G speed and 5G reach, while Verizon may be stronger for LTE breadth, rural consistency, or a particular local market. Opensignal’s January 2026 U.S. report placed Verizon second in its overall experience ranking, while T-Mobile led several 5G-related experience categories; those broad findings are not a guarantee for an individual address. Opensignal U.S. report, January 2026. Verizon also cites RootMetrics’ second-half 2025 report for its “best network” claim; that is Verizon’s attributed claim, not proof it is best for every customer. Verizon’s comparison.

Match the plans on features, not the word “unlimited”
Before comparing prices, check each plan’s premium smartphone data, hotspot allowance and speed after the allowance, video streaming quality, network management during congestion, and international features. Phone and hotspot data may have separate limits. Also verify that the plan qualifies for the device promotion you intend to use; changing tiers can affect benefits or credits.
T-Mobile’s displayed plan disclosure gives typical 5G download speeds of approximately 144–561 Mbps, upload speeds of 6–34 Mbps, and latency of 15–27 ms for the plan group shown. These are typical network figures, not a promise of the speed you will get at a given location. T-Mobile plan details.
Verizon’s prepaid Unlimited Plus page describes 50 GB of premium smartphone data and 25 GB of premium hotspot data before lower-speed service or congestion management. Those prepaid figures should not be applied to Verizon postpaid plans; check the exact postpaid plan and line count instead. Verizon prepaid plans.

T-Mobile’s limited-time Keep and Switch offer can reimburse up to $800 per eligible line for as many as four voice lines when you switch from a listed carrier such as Verizon. The offer is conditional: it generally requires an eligible device, a qualifying port-in and service, proof of the remaining device balance, and at least 90 days on the prior carrier’s device-payment plan. Check the live terms and submission deadline before ordering. Keep and Switch eligibility.
This is reimbursement, not necessarily an immediate payment to Verizon. You may have to pay Verizon’s remaining balance first, then submit qualifying documents and wait for approval. T-Mobile says reimbursement is generally issued as a virtual prepaid Mastercard rather than cash or an instant account credit; the card is generally valid for six months. - Reimbursement: A later payment, subject to proof, approval, and offer terms.
- Bill credits: Monthly discounts that may require keeping a qualifying plan and service for a set period.
- “Free” phone: Usually conditional on factors such as trade-in, port-in, financing, or a qualifying plan; taxes or other charges may remain.
- Early upgrade: May affect the old device financing or promotional credits.
Before counting the offer as savings, compare your payoff with the per-line cap and confirm that each device and line qualifies. T-Mobile’s terms exclude some circumstances, including devices previously used for the same promotion. A reimbursement may reduce the cost of switching, but it does not make the new monthly plan cheaper by itself.
Check your phone before porting
Paid off does not automatically mean unlocked or fully compatible. T-Mobile’s materials say Verizon phones purchased from an authorized retailer on or after January 27, 2026, are unlocked once fully paid; phones purchased before that date are automatically unlocked 60 days after purchase or activation under the stated rules. Check the actual device’s lock status and compatibility before relying on those general rules. T-Mobile switching and device information.

International service
Compare the destinations and plan tiers you will actually use. Check Canada and Mexico separately from other countries, and look at high-speed data allowances, speeds after an allowance, international texting and calling, data passes, in-flight access, hotspot availability abroad, and cruise-ship exclusions. A carrier is not simply “better internationally” without specifying the destination and plan.
Perks and price guarantees
Verizon’s Simplicity strategy pairs the plan with optional bundles and a separate Verizon Loyalty program. Verizon says eligible customers may receive Verizon Dollars and may have activation or upgrade fees waived through Loyalty. Check eligibility and whether the value applies to your account. Verizon Simplicity and Loyalty information.
T-Mobile’s higher-tier Experience plans may include entertainment, upgrade, and connected-device benefits. Home internet bundles
Compare mobile and home service together if you use Verizon home internet or plan to bundle with either carrier. Verizon One combines mobile with Fios, 5G Home, or Home Internet Lite products. Its Home Internet Lite Extra option has a stated 200 GB threshold, after which speeds can be reduced. Verizon One details. A mobile saving can be outweighed by a lost home-internet discount, so compare the combined household total.
Verizon Simplicity may make staying more attractive
Verizon advertises Simplicity at $45 per line and a temporary qualifying-switcher offer of $30 per line. Treat the $30 figure as a promotional price, not the standard ongoing rate, and verify its duration, eligibility, and what the quoted price includes. Verizon describes Simplicity as providing access to its best 5G network without traditional network-tier distinctions. Verizon’s Simplicity announcement.
If you already have Verizon, ask what changing to Simplicity would do to your current discounts, device credits, perks, and home-internet bundle. Staying on a current plan or moving to a new Verizon plan may be better than switching carriers if the total value of what you would give up exceeds the T-Mobile savings.
Switch without losing your number or promotion eligibility
- Save your latest Verizon bill. Record each line’s phone number, account number, device balance, and remaining promotional credits.
- Get the transfer details. Obtain the correct Verizon transfer PIN and make sure each number is active and ready to port.
- Verify every device. Check unlock status, compatibility, financing age, and eligibility for any payoff offer.
- Get a precise T-Mobile quote. Confirm plan, line count, taxes and fees, hotspot, international features, one-time charges, and promotion requirements.
- Keep Verizon service active. Do not cancel first; porting a number typically closes the transferred line. Wait for each port to complete before making changes to remaining lines.
- Activate and test T-Mobile. Check calls, texts, voicemail, data, Wi-Fi calling, hotspot, and two-factor-authentication messages. Allow time for number transfer, activation, and data migration; an online order time is not the same as a completed switch.
- Submit the reimbursement claim promptly. Follow the current deadline and upload documents that show the required device and balance information.
- Review both final and first bills. Check Verizon for final device balances or watch and tablet lines that remain active; monitor the first two or three T-Mobile bills for charges or credits that do not match the order.
T-Mobile’s switching instructions call for proof of the device-payment plan and a qualifying port-in. Keep screenshots and order documents for every offer, and do not assume separate promotions can be combined. T-Mobile switching requirements.
Quick Recap
When not to switch—and what else to consider
- Stay with Verizon if T-Mobile service is weak indoors or on routes you rely on, even if the national coverage picture looks favorable.
- Pause if device credits, a legacy plan, free lines, or a home-internet bundle would be lost and the replacement offer does not make up the difference.
- Reconsider if your expected savings depend entirely on a temporary price or promotion, or if the phone payoff offer does not cover your eligible balance.
- Consider a Verizon-network prepaid provider such as Visible or US Mobile, or a T-Mobile-network prepaid option such as Mint Mobile or Metro by T-Mobile, if you want to compare service without assuming postpaid plans are the only choices. Check current plan terms directly with each provider.
