The IRS told participating states on November 3, 2025, that the service would not be offered that season and that no future launch date had been set, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
What happened to IRS Direct File?
Direct File was a web-based service that let eligible taxpayers prepare and submit federal returns directly to the IRS. After its 2024 pilot, the Treasury Department and IRS announced it as a permanent free filing option. For the 2025 filing season, it was available in 25 states and supported specified income types and tax credits; those details describe the service’s historical scope, not current availability.
On October 2, 2025, Treasury said it would suspend the program. Its report cited high costs, limited participation, and a need to prioritize other agency resources. Treasury described the decision as necessary because, in its words, “A government-run tool like Direct File has proven too costly to sustain.” That is the administration’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about the program’s value. GAO later reported that the Direct File website displayed a closure message and went offline.
The program had users who valued it: Treasury reported that more than 140,000 taxpayers used the 2024 pilot, claimed more than $90 million in refunds, and saved an estimated $5.6 million in federal tax-preparation costs. Those are Treasury’s figures for the pilot, not estimates of current participation or savings.

Can you still file taxes for free in 2026?
Yes. The IRS listed several free filing routes for the 2026 season, when it began accepting tax-year 2025 returns. They differ in who qualifies, how much preparation help they provide, and whether state returns are included. The IRS projected that it would receive about 164 million individual returns for tax year 2025.
| Option | Who it may suit | Preparation style and coverage |
|---|---|---|
| IRS Free File guided software | Taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less may access participating partner software. Each partner can add its own criteria, such as age, state residency, or military status. | Guided partner software for federal returns. Some partners include free state preparation and filing; others may not. |
| Free File Fillable Forms | Available regardless of income; best for people comfortable preparing their own return. | Online forms for self-preparation, rather than guided interview-style software. |
| VITA and TCE | Qualified individuals seeking volunteer tax-preparation assistance. | Free basic preparation through IRS-listed volunteer programs; eligibility and service availability depend on the program. |
| MilTax | Eligible members of the military community. | The IRS says it supports electronic filing of a federal return and up to three state returns at no cost. |
How to choose among the free alternatives
Use Free File if you want guided software
Start with the IRS Free File page rather than assuming every partner has the same terms. For the 2026 filing season, the IRS set a 2025 AGI threshold of $89,000 or less to access partner software, but individual partners may impose additional eligibility requirements. Check the offer’s state, age, and other restrictions before beginning, and confirm whether a state return is included.

In a May 12, 2026 decision, GAO concluded that suspending Direct File met the definition of a rule under the Administrative Procedure Act, but fell within the Congressional Review Act exception for agency organization, procedure, or practice that does not substantially affect the rights or obligations of non-agency parties. The decision concerned whether the suspension had to be submitted under the Congressional Review Act. It was not an assessment of whether ending Direct File was sound policy.
