Re:

Is Gold-Backed Crypto a Good Bet in a Bear Market?

A gold-backed token follows gold, not crypto. Here is what the bear-market argument gets right, what it misses, and how to check backing before you buy.

Not on its own. A gold-backed token is designed to follow the price of gold, not the price of crypto, so a fall in crypto prices does not by itself make it a defensive holding. Whether it holds up in a downturn depends on what gold does during that downturn, plus risks that belong to the token, its issuer and the platform you use to hold it.

What a gold-backed token represents

The clearest public example is PAX Gold (PAXG), issued by Paxos. Its terms state: “Each PAXG token is equal to one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold.” The PAX Gold Terms and Conditions (last modified 12 December 2025) say the gold is held on a segregated basis in LBMA-approved security-carrier vaults, and that token holders carry the economic value and the risks and rewards of the gold represented.

Two other points in the same terms change how the product should be understood. The tokens are “not money or legal tender and are not monetary instruments,” and converting or redeeming through Paxos requires a verified customer account. Holding a token is therefore a contractual position with the issuer, not simply possession of metal. PAXG is one product with its own terms; other gold-backed tokens can differ in custody, reporting and redemption.

Why a crypto bear market doesn’t settle the question

The title’s argument has three links. A gold-backed token has to (1) hold its value while crypto falls, (2) track gold closely enough that its price follows gold rather than crypto sentiment, and (3) let you sell at a price close to the gold it represents. The second link is built into a product like PAXG. The first and third are where the uncertainty sits.

  • ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.

The World Gold Council’s 2021 comparison of gold and cryptocurrencies draws the same distinction from the other side: the two are fundamentally different assets, with different demand patterns and different risk profiles. That analysis is dated, so it is useful for the conceptual difference rather than for current market figures.

Gold’s defensive role depends on the macro backdrop

The World Gold Council’s bear-case analysis of 10 July 2025 reviews past gold pullbacks and links many of them, at least partly, to rising opportunity costs tied to real interest rates and the US dollar. Because gold pays no yield, its opportunity cost rises when real rates rise. The same analysis names other conditions that have put pressure on gold:

  • easing geopolitical risk, which can reduce the safe-haven demand gold attracts;
  • cooling risk and uncertainty;
  • stronger economic performance;
  • cooling inflation;
  • weakening price momentum.

The analysis also lists longer-term bearish scenarios: reduced central-bank buying, competition from other assets, shifts in consumer preference, and significant increases in supply. None of these is a timetable. The practical point is that the conditions that helped gold in one downturn may be absent in the next, so a crypto bear market is not a reliable signal for gold.

How deep gold’s downturns have been

The World Gold Council’s 2025 analysis measures historical declines in the monthly LBMA Gold Price PM in US dollars. These are past drawdowns from the Council’s table, not forecasts.

Pullback window Decline Length of window
November 1974 to August 1976 43% About 21 months
August 1980 to June 1982 52% About 22 months
January 1983 to February 1985 57% About 25 months
November 1987 to August 1999 48% About 11 years, 9 months
August 2011 to December 2015 42% About 4 years, 4 months

The declines were large, and the windows varied enormously in length. A holder who needs the money during a long stretch like 1987 to 1999 has no income to fall back on while waiting for recovery.

The World Gold Council’s 2026 edition of Gold as a strategic asset adds two points. It identifies gains close to 30% in 2010 and losses close to 30% in 2013 as examples of gold’s annual volatility, and it says gold’s volatility is not low and that medium-term underperformance has occurred. It also states the core trade-off plainly: “No cash flows: A widely perceived drawback of gold is that it does not provide a regular income, unlike other asset classes such as bonds, property or even some company stocks.” Gold carries no credit risk and makes no promise to repay, but holders depend entirely on price appreciation.

Gold’s rallies are just as real. The same 2025 analysis puts the gold price at US$1,429 an ounce on 3 November 2022 and US$3,287 an ounce on 30 June 2025, more than double over that window. The result depends on the start date: a different window tells a different story.

Gold-backed tokens and unbacked crypto play different roles

Factor Gold-backed token (PAXG as the example) Unbacked cryptoasset
Main price driver Gold price, through the one-ounce definition in the issuer’s terms The asset’s own market; no reserve asset anchors its value
Backing Gold held on a segregated basis in LBMA-approved security-carrier vaults, per Paxos terms None
Holder’s claim Fractional ownership of the gold under the issuer’s terms Set by the asset’s own design
Regulatory exposure Issuer terms plus the rules of each jurisdiction; products differ A framework the World Gold Council’s 2021 comparison describes as possibly evolving
Risk profile Gold price, issuer, custody, redemption, platform and blockchain risks Significant risk, according to the 2021 comparison

The World Gold Council’s 2026 discussion of digital gold makes a point that applies to every product in this category: trading and recordkeeping are digital, but backing, custody, audit and redemption terms vary. Assess each issuer and its holdings separately rather than treating “gold-backed” as one standard.

How to check whether a token is backed

The versions described here are the ones dated in the text. Fees, redemption minimums and attestation schedules can change, so check the issuer’s current pages before acting.

  • You will receive one coin per purchase in a divisible blister card with a unique serial number shown on the back of the assay card. The yer-date of the coin will be random.
  1. Open the issuer’s current terms and confirm how one token is defined. For PAXG, one token equals one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold. Compare the “last modified” date with the version you are reading.
  2. Find the custody language. Look for segregated or allocated holding, the type of vault, and who holds the gold. For PAXG, the terms name LBMA-approved security-carrier vaults.
  3. Open the latest monthly attestation and check its date and the firm that issued it. Paxos’s transparency page says reports dated on or after 28 February 2025 are issued by KPMG LLP, and earlier reports were issued by WithumSmith+Brown, PC.
  4. If your wallet is eligible, use Paxos’s public allocation lookup to see the gold attributed to your holding. The product page describes this lookup only for eligible on-chain wallets, so confirm eligibility first.
  5. Read the ownership and insolvency wording. Establish what your claim is if the issuer fails. If the terms are silent on this point, treat it as an open question rather than an assumed protection.

Paxos publishes these attestations as issuer disclosures. They show what was reported at a given date. They do not guarantee token price stability, immediate liquidity or smooth redemption for every holder.

What a holder can actually redeem

The PAXG terms distinguish conversion into US dollars, conversion into unallocated gold, and conversion into allocated gold. Conversion or redemption through Paxos requires a verified customer account. The terms name the first two routes, but this article does not summarize their minimums, fees or timing, so check the current schedule before relying on either one.

The physical-bar route has the most specific thresholds. Redeeming a London Good Delivery bar requires at least 430 PAXG per bar, plus the applicable fee per bar. Once the bar is handed to the delivery service you choose, the holder is responsible for delivery, and Paxos says redemption may take several business days depending on method.

The 430-token minimum is large for a small holder. At any gold price, 430 tokens represent 430 troy ounces. A holder with 100 PAXG cannot take a bar at all and would need to use one of the other routes, each with its own terms.

Regulation depends on where you live

The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s 2026 policy overview describes a new cryptoasset regime that extends the FCA’s role across a broader range of cryptoasset activity. Specified rules apply to firms granted permission on or after 25 October 2027. The FCA’s warnings describe crypto-related investments as high risk and say consumers could lose the entire investment.

That is UK guidance. It does not establish how any particular gold-backed token is treated elsewhere, and public materials on these tokens do not establish a universal regulatory or deposit-protection status. Confirm which rules apply to you and to the issuer before buying.

What else to weigh before buying

  • Fees. Purchase, trading, network, conversion and storage fees can each apply. Current amounts are set in the issuer’s and platform’s schedules.
  • Liquidity and spreads. The price you can sell at on a trading venue can differ from the gold value the token represents, and it depends on market conditions at that moment.
  • Platform, wallet and blockchain. An exchange, wallet or smart contract can fail or be compromised independently of the gold.
  • Suitability. Whether a gold position fits your portfolio depends on your time horizon, your other holdings, and whether you could hold through a multi-year gold downturn like the ones shown above. Tax treatment varies by country and is not covered here.
