Not automatically. GHO borrowed through Aave V3 on Ethereum is minted against collateral, rather than paid out of a pool of GHO deposited by suppliers. Low liquidity in an Aave collateral reserve therefore does not, by itself, mean Aave has run out of GHO to lend. But thin liquidity in markets where GHO trades can make its price more sensitive to large orders and weaken arbitrage. Aave’s GHO Stability Module (GSM) is designed to help stabilize the price, but its inventory, limits, fees and operating status constrain conversions. GHO is designed to track $1; that is not a promise of an exact market price or an always-available $1 redemption.
What does “Aave pools run low” mean?
There is no single pool whose balance determines every part of GHO’s availability or peg. The phrase can refer to at least three different things: an Aave reserve holding collateral, capacity to mint more GHO through a facilitator, or liquidity in a market where GHO can be bought and sold. GSM inventory is another separate constraint.
| What is low? | What it can affect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Aave collateral reserve | Supplying or withdrawing that asset, and the condition of borrowing positions that use it as collateral | Reserve liquidity and utilization, collateral eligibility, and liquidation conditions |
| GHO facilitator headroom | How much additional GHO that facilitator can mint | Its bucket capacity and current bucket level |
| Secondary-market GHO liquidity | Price impact and slippage when buying or selling GHO | Depth and balances on the specific venue, trading volume, incentives, and price deviation |
| GSM inventory or exposure capacity | Whether the module can convert GHO and an approved stablecoin, and how much it can convert | Funded inventory, exposure caps, fees, pricing strategy, and whether conversions are frozen |
| Governance parameters | The scope and pace of possible changes to issuance incentives or module settings | Current proposals, delegated authority, and on-chain parameter values |
These measures are not interchangeable. A statement that “Aave liquidity is low” is incomplete unless it identifies the asset, market or module, chain, and measurement time.
Why low Aave reserve liquidity does not automatically stop GHO borrowing
When a borrower uses the Aave V3 Ethereum facilitator, the protocol mints GHO against eligible collateral. This differs from borrowing an asset that suppliers have deposited into an ordinary lending reserve: the borrower is not drawing GHO from a pool of supplier deposits. Aave’s GHO protocol documentation says that minting is instead bounded by collateralization requirements and the facilitator’s capacity.

“Since GHO is created and not borrowed from suppliers, GHO is not subject to restrictions on available liquidity, and instead, the Facilitator cap and collateralization requirements define the limits to which GHO can be minted as calculated below.”
That distinction answers a narrow question about the borrowing mechanism; it does not mean every collateral asset is always easy to supply or withdraw, that a borrower can always mint more GHO, or that GHO will always trade at $1. A reserve can have its own liquidity constraints, while a facilitator can have limited headroom. The relevant checks depend on which constraint the borrower is concerned about.
GHO debt can be repaid. If an account becomes undercollateralized, liquidation conditions can allow liquidators to repay GHO debt against collateral, affecting outstanding GHO supply. These mechanisms govern positions and supply; they do not establish an unconditional market-price floor.

How thin trading liquidity can put pressure on the peg
GHO’s market price is influenced by trading where buyers and sellers meet. If a GHO trading pool or order book is shallow, a large sale can move the price more than it would in a deeper market. Thin depth can also make arbitrage—the trading that can push a price back toward its target—harder or less attractive to execute. Aave governance material has identified insufficient decentralized-exchange liquidity as a risk that can contribute to depegging or price manipulation.
This is separate from liquidity in an Aave collateral reserve. A collateral reserve can be low while GHO trading is reasonably deep, or GHO trading can be thin even when collateral reserves are healthy. Neither condition alone establishes GHO’s current price or the likelihood of a depeg.
What the GSM can do—and what can limit it
The GSM provides conversion routes between GHO and governance-approved stablecoins. Aave’s help documentation describes an initial fixed 1:1 pricing strategy and a framework that can also support fixed or dynamic pricing. Fees and exposure caps apply. Oracle-based price bounds can freeze conversions, and inventory or reserve limits can constrain how much the module can exchange.

When GHO trades below its target, a trader may be able to buy discounted GHO and convert it through a GSM at the configured terms, if the relevant route is available and has capacity. That activity can create arbitrage pressure toward the target. But it is not the same as a guaranteed right for any holder to exchange any amount of GHO for exactly one dollar: the approved asset, applicable price strategy, fees, cap, inventory and freeze state all matter.
A March 2026 Aave governance post describes a RemoteGSM common-reserve/direct-facilitator model and says the upgrade was activated through AIPs 452 and 453. It explains a below-peg arbitrage route in which a trader buys discounted GHO and redeems it through a GSM. The post does not establish how much usable inventory is available now.

What published figures do—and do not—tell you
Aave’s undated GHO protocol documentation, crawled within six days of 7 October 2026, describes the following Steward-related limits. They are documented parameters, not independently verified live contract values:
- A trailing 30-day average GHO price range of $0.995–$1.005 is described as a condition relevant to rate adjustments.
- The referenced Steward authority can adjust rates by up to 500 basis points per two-day period.
- The documented upper rate boundary in that section is 25% APR.
- The documentation says Stewards can raise a borrow-cap threshold up to a total borrow cap of 100 million GHO.
A 2026 Aave Institutional governance proposal reports $59.9 million in GSM redemption inventory across two funded instances on 24 September 2026. That is a dated, source-reported snapshot—not a live balance on 7 October, a guarantee that every dollar is available to any user, or a measure of GHO depth across trading venues.
Aave lists several facilitator categories, including Aave V3, cross-chain CCIP, GSM and Flashmint. Their capacity and purpose differ, so no single Aave pool or facilitator should be treated as the whole GHO supply system.

How to assess the risk at a particular time
The cited documentation explains mechanisms, but it does not establish current pool balances, facilitator headroom, DEX depth, GSM inventory, market price or freeze status. To assess a specific moment, identify the chain and venue first, then check the relevant live data rather than inferring the peg from a general claim about “Aave liquidity.”
- Identify the constraint. Is the concern a collateral reserve, a facilitator’s minting capacity, a GHO trading venue, or a GSM conversion route?
- Check the relevant live state. For a reserve, inspect liquidity and utilization; for a facilitator, bucket capacity and level; for a trading venue, depth, balances and price impact; for a GSM, inventory, cap, fee, pricing and freeze state.
- Compare price and conversion terms. A market quote near $1 does not prove that a large trade can execute near that price. A GSM route’s configured price does not establish that it is available without limits.
- Confirm governance settings. Review current proposals and on-chain parameters before treating a documented Steward limit or dated inventory figure as operative today.
The risk depends on the specific market and module conditions. Low collateral-reserve liquidity alone is not evidence that GHO minting has stopped or that the peg is failing; thin GHO trading liquidity or constrained GSM conversions are more directly relevant to market-price pressure.
