Re:

Is Fort Knox’s Gold Still There? What Trump’s $400 Billion Question Gets Wrong

Official records report 147,341,858.382 fine troy ounces at Fort Knox, but that quantity is not proof of a new public bar-by-bar inspection. Here’s how to understand the audits, the $42.222 accounting rate and the much larger market-value figures for all Mint deep-storage gold.

The latest reported Fort Knox reserve is 147,341,858.382 fine troy ounces. That figure appears in the U.S. Mint’s location chart and again in the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’ August 2026 monthly table. It is an official reported quantity, not evidence of a newly completed public, bar-by-bar inspection. The records cited here do not substantiate that gold was stolen.

What is known about the gold at Fort Knox?

The U.S. Mint reports that Fort Knox held 147,341,858.382 fine troy ounces in January 2023. The same quantity appears in the latest located monthly reserve table, issued for August 2026 by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The Mint describes a standard gold bar as approximately 400 ounces, or 27.5 pounds; the reserve is held in bars, not as a single block of gold.

The Mint also says that only very small quantities have been removed for purity testing during regularly scheduled audits and that, except for those samples, no gold has been transferred to or from the depository for many years. That is the Mint’s account of custody; a published quantity or agency statement is not the same as an independently witnessed count of every bar.

For historical context, a Mint record of a 1974-era inspection describes 147.4 million fine troy ounces in 13 vault compartments. The account says the inspection involved a committee including GAO and Treasury auditors, as well as Mint technicians who assayed and weighed gold. It is a dated snapshot, not evidence that 1974 was the last audit of any kind.

What did Trump and Musk ask—and what is documented?

In February 2025, President Donald Trump said he wanted to inspect Fort Knox, and Elon Musk publicly asked who could confirm that gold had not been stolen. Those statements raised a question; they did not establish a theft or announce an inventory result. The Associated Press reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “We do an audit every year,” and that “All the gold is present and accounted for.” These are attributed statements, not a newly documented public physical inspection.

The sources cited here do not document a later public, bar-by-bar inventory or a finding that gold was stolen. That distinction matters: a financial audit may check records, schedules, controls and supporting procedures without being a publicly observed count of every bar.

What do the annual audits actually establish?

The Treasury Inspector General’s audit covered the U.S. Mint’s custodial deep-storage reserve schedules as of September 30, 2025 and 2024. The OIG concluded that the schedules were fairly presented in all material respects. Its opinion concerns financial schedules and related audit procedures; it should not be recast as proof that every Fort Knox bar was publicly counted in 2025.

In other words, the audit provides assurance about the presentation of the audited financial information within the stated scope. It does not answer the narrower question of whether an outside audience recently watched a physical count of each Fort Knox bar. The audit report’s scope and limitations are set out in the Treasury OIG report.

QONS Coin Cleaner and Protector Kit Solution for Cleaning All Coins
  • Coin cleaner is primarily designed for cleaning and maintaining coins, effectively removing stains and oxides accumulated during circulation, thereby restoring coins to their original shine.
  • Coin cleaner, mild and free from strong irritating elements, it is compatible with the metal surface of coins during the cleaning process.During the cleaning process, an odor may be produced. It is recommended to wear a mask and gloves.
  • Pour an appropriate amount of coin cleaner into a container, place the coins that need cleaning into it and let them soak for a while (the soaking time depends on the degree of metal corrosion). Then, gently clean the surface of the coins using warm water and tools such as a toothbrush. Finally, rinse them thoroughly with clean water.
  • After cleaning, the surface of the coins becomes clearer, making it easier for collectors to identify the year, version, and minting process. The coins also appear brighter and smoother, providing a more pleasing visual experience.
  • When placing coins in the cleaner solution for soaking, it is important to control the soaking time to avoid damaging the coins due to excessive exposure. Additionally, avoid using high-pressure water to directly rinse the coins, as this may cause impact and damage to them.

Why does Fort Knox’s gold not have one simple dollar value?

Gold’s accounting value and its market value are different measures. Federal law sets the statutory accounting rate at $42.222 per fine troy ounce, a rate established in 1973. It is not a current gold price. Applying it to the Fort Knox quantity gives a book-value calculation of roughly $6.2 billion, but that figure should not be presented as what the gold could sell for on the market.

For market context, the OIG reported that the Mint’s combined deep-storage holdings—not Fort Knox alone—totaled 245,262,897.04 fine troy ounces and had an estimated market value of about $938.204 billion as of September 30, 2025, using the LBMA PM gold price. The Congressional Research Service separately described the broader U.S. gold stock as worth more than $900 billion as of September 11, 2025. Neither figure is a Fort Knox-only valuation.

The title’s $400 billion figure therefore needs a date and valuation method. The records cited here do not verify it as the current value of Fort Knox’s holdings. The latest located site-specific quantity is for August 2026, while the latest located market valuation is dated September 30, 2025 and covers all Mint deep-storage gold—not Fort Knox by itself. A current October 2026 Fort Knox dollar valuation is not established by these figures.
