In April 2025, Tesla registrations across 32 European countries fell 49% year over year even as battery-electric registrations in those countries rose about 28%. Reporting cited political backlash as one factor, alongside competition and other business conditions.
What the registration figures show
The sharpest comparison in the available figures is for April 2025. The Associated Press reported 7,261 Tesla registrations across 32 European countries that month, down 49% from April 2024. Battery-electric registrations overall across the same group of countries rose about 28% year over year. That contrast suggests Tesla’s decline was not simply a reflection of falling demand for electric cars in those markets. Associated Press, April 2025
The geographic scope matters: the AP figure covers 32 European countries, not just European Union members. Separately, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reported that EU new-car registrations fell 1.9% in the first half of 2025, while battery-electric cars made up 15.6% of the EU market. Those EU-wide figures describe a different geography and period, so they should not be combined with the AP’s April total as though they were one series. ACEA, H1 2025
Could Musk’s politics be part of the problem?
News coverage identified political backlash to Musk’s politics as a factor facing Tesla in Europe. That makes the explanation plausible, but sales registrations do not record why buyers chose or rejected a brand. The available figures therefore cannot establish how many customers were motivated by Musk’s political positions, or whether that backlash caused any particular share of Tesla’s decline. Competition is another reported factor. Reuters, citing JATO Dynamics, reported that Volkswagen overtook Tesla in European fully electric vehicle sales in 2025. That points to a broader competitive challenge as well as the possibility of political backlash; the cited coverage does not quantify the relative effect of either factor. Reuters via Investing.com
What the later EU market data can—and cannot—tell us
ACEA’s August 2026 year-to-date figures show the wider EU market moving in a different direction from the weaker first half of 2025: new-car registrations were up 5.3% year to date, and battery-electric cars held 21.7% of the market through August, compared with 15.8% a year earlier. These are market-wide EU figures, not Tesla figures. They show that electric cars gained market share, but they do not establish that Tesla recovered or explain its later sales performance.
