DraftKings could be a long-term growth investment if it can sustain customer engagement, expand where permitted, and turn revenue into durable earnings and cash flow. But the recent results show why growth alone is not enough: revenue rose 5.8% in the first half of 2026, while the company swung from a $124.1 million profit to a $46.5 million loss. Whether DKNG is attractive depends on its execution, financial resilience, risks, and the price an investor pays—not just the size of the sports betting market.
This is an analytical framework, not individualized investment advice. The financial figures below are from DraftKings’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K and its second-quarter 2026 filings and release; valuation figures are a dated market snapshot.
What does DraftKings sell, and what drives its growth?
DraftKings Inc. is a digital sports entertainment and gaming company. Its products include mobile sports betting, online casino games (iGaming), daily fantasy sports, lottery products, and prediction markets. Its 2025 annual report identifies Sportsbook and iGaming as its principal revenue engines.
The business must attract and retain customers, encourage them to use multiple products, and operate in jurisdictions where it has permission to do so. Revenue is not the same as profit: gaming taxes, promotions, payment processing, technology, and marketing all affect what the company keeps.

In its August 2026 second-quarter release, DraftKings said its mobile sportsbook was live in 27 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, representing approximately 53% of the U.S. population. Its iGaming offering was live in five states, representing approximately 11%. These are company-reported figures at that time; the footprint depends on changing laws, licenses, and operating permissions.
Is DraftKings profitable?
The answer depends on the period and measure. DraftKings reported a small GAAP profit for fiscal 2025 after a substantial loss in 2024, but first-half 2026 results returned to a loss. Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, was positive in the second quarter of 2026 but fell sharply year over year. These figures should be read together rather than treating revenue growth or one adjusted measure as proof of durable profitability.
| Period and measure | DraftKings reported |
|---|---|
| Fiscal 2025 revenue | $6.1 billion, up 27.0% from $4.8 billion in fiscal 2024, according to the 2026 Form 10-K. |
| Fiscal 2025 Sportsbook and iGaming revenue | $5.6 billion, up 27.7% from fiscal 2024, according to the 2026 Form 10-K. |
| Fiscal 2025 net income | $3.7 million, compared with a $507.3 million net loss in fiscal 2024, according to the 2026 Form 10-K. |
| First half of 2026 revenue | $3.089 billion, up 5.8% from $2.921 billion in the first half of 2025, according to DraftKings’ Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. |
| First half of 2026 net income (loss) | A $46.5 million net loss, compared with $124.1 million of net income in the first half of 2025, according to the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. |
| Q2 2026 revenue and net income (loss) | Revenue of $1.443 billion and a $67.6 million net loss, compared with $1.513 billion of revenue and $157.9 million of net income in Q2 2025, according to the Q2 2026 results release. |
| Q2 2026 adjusted EBITDA | $114.6 million, down from $300.6 million in Q2 2025, according to the Q2 2026 results release. |
Adjusted EBITDA excludes items including stock-based compensation, litigation and advocacy-related costs, depreciation and amortization, interest, and taxes. Because it is not GAAP net income, read the company’s reconciliation alongside the headline figure; positive adjusted EBITDA does not by itself establish positive earnings or cash generation after those excluded costs.
What to look for in the cost structure
In the first half of 2026, cost of revenue increased 8.4% year over year while revenue increased 5.8%. Cost of revenue was 59.6% of revenue, compared with 58.1% in the first half of 2025. Sales and marketing expense increased 25.6%. DraftKings cited gaming taxes, platform costs, promotional reinvestment, customer acquisition, and major sports events among the factors affecting costs.

For a long-term investor, the key question is whether the company can improve margins as it scales. Watch whether customer activity translates into recurring contribution profit rather than relying on favorable sports outcomes or heavy promotional spending, and whether adjusted EBITDA progress is accompanied by GAAP earnings and operating cash flow.
Can DraftKings fund growth and meet its obligations?
At June 30, 2026, DraftKings reported $983.9 million in cash and cash equivalents, excluding restricted cash and funds reserved for users. It also reported approximately $1.260 billion of net convertible notes, which mature in March 2028, subject to earlier conversion, redemption, or repurchase. Management said it believed cash on hand would cover current working-capital and capital-expenditure needs for at least twelve months.
That liquidity statement is management’s assessment at a point in time, not a guarantee about future funding. Investors evaluating the balance sheet can track:
- Operating cash flow and whether it supports product investment and day-to-day needs.
- Debt repayment or refinancing as the notes approach maturity.
- Share-count changes, stock-based compensation, and any repurchases, which affect ownership and potential dilution.
What is management expecting, and what is still only a growth opportunity?
In its August 2026 Q2 release, DraftKings maintained fiscal 2026 guidance of $6.5 billion to $6.9 billion in revenue and $700 million to $900 million in adjusted EBITDA. These are forward-looking company estimates, not independently verified outcomes, and the EBITDA range is not a GAAP net-income forecast. The company’s February guidance release said the ranges assume state tax rates remain consistent with then-current levels and exclude potential variance from sports outcomes.

CFO Alan Ellingson said in the Q2 2026 release: “Our core business remains on track to generate approximately $1 billion of Adjusted EBITDA this year, providing us with financial flexibility to invest behind the significant opportunity that we are seeing in Predictions,” The quoted approximately $1 billion figure is his statement; the maintained formal guidance range in the same August release was $700 million to $900 million. Investors should distinguish an executive’s characterization from the published range.
In March 2026, DraftKings described a $55 billion to $80 billion estimated 2030 industry gross-revenue opportunity, including potential expansion of sportsbook and casino markets and DraftKings Predictions. That is management’s estimate of an industry opportunity, not DraftKings’ forecast revenue, realized sales, or a promised shareholder return. The company also announced plans for an integrated “DraftKings Sports & Casino” super app. Both the app and Predictions could broaden engagement, but execution and returns remain uncertain.
Is DKNG stock attractively valued?
A promising business is not automatically an attractive stock at every price. Valuation asks how much future growth and profitability the current share price already assumes, and whether the investment still makes sense if growth slows, margins disappoint, or execution takes longer.
At the October 6, 2026 close, Stock Analysis listed DraftKings at $19.75 per share, with a $9.80 billion market capitalization and $10.74 billion enterprise value. Its page showed a price-to-sales ratio of 1.57 and a forward P/E of 37.12; trailing P/E was unavailable because trailing earnings were negative. These are time-sensitive third-party calculations, not fixed characteristics of the company, and they change as the share price and reported results change.

Because trailing earnings were negative in that snapshot, a sales multiple or forward P/E cannot settle the question on its own. Consider enterprise value relative to sales, the assumptions behind forward earnings estimates, likely cash generation, and how the share price would compare with plausible downside scenarios. Analyst targets or broad market consensus are not proof of fair value.

Regulation, legalization, and gaming taxes
Expansion depends on laws, licenses, and operating permissions in each jurisdiction. Higher gaming taxes can directly pressure margins. DraftKings’ FY2026 guidance assumes state tax rates remain consistent with current levels, so a change could affect results.
Competition and customer-acquisition costs
DraftKings competes with established gaming businesses and other entertainment options. Its 2026 filing also identifies competition in emerging prediction markets. Promotions and marketing can help attract users, but spending heavily to acquire customers can weigh on current profitability.
Sports outcomes and earnings volatility
Betting outcomes can make revenue and profitability fluctuate between periods. DraftKings cautions that historical results are not necessarily indicative of future performance, so a strong or weak quarter may not represent the underlying trend.
Best Value
Prediction-market uncertainty
DraftKings warns that expanding prediction markets can involve heightened legal, regulatory, compliance, reputational, and operational risks, as well as significant investment. The opportunity is not established simply because management sees potential demand.
Execution and investment needs
The super app, Predictions, and new-market launches may broaden the customer base, but they may require sustained technology, marketing, compliance, and promotional spending before producing attractive returns. The important question is whether incremental investment creates durable economics rather than simply adding activity.
Volatility and concentrated voting power
DraftKings’ 2025 Form 10-K warns: “The trading price of our Class A common stock has been, and will likely continue to be, volatile, and you could lose all or part of your investment.” The filing also describes a dual-class share structure that concentrates voting power with the CEO and chairman, limiting other shareholders’ influence over important decisions.
Quick Recap
What should you ask before buying DKNG for the long term?
- Are customer growth and retention translating into recurring contribution profit, rather than depending on favorable sports outcomes or heavy promotions?
- Can margins improve despite gaming-tax pressure and customer-acquisition costs?
- Are GAAP earnings and operating cash flow improving alongside adjusted EBITDA?
- Can DraftKings fund product expansion and meet its debt obligations without excessive dilution or weaker economics?
- How much of the growth case depends on future legalization, and what happens if additional jurisdictions do not open?
- Can prediction markets become a durable, legally compliant source of incremental users and revenue, or will they consume capital without adequate returns?
- Does the valuation leave room for slower growth, lower margins, or execution setbacks?
- Are you comfortable with a volatile stock and the company’s concentrated voting structure?
