Delta SkyMiles can be worth earning in 2026 if you can redeem them for trips you want at a better total cost than paying cash. There is no dependable fixed cash value for every mile in Delta’s published rules: award prices and seat availability can change. If you are pursuing 2027 Medallion status, the separate question is whether your 2026 qualifying activity is worth the benefits you expect to use.
When are Delta SkyMiles worth earning?
Judge SkyMiles against a specific trip, not a universal cents-per-mile estimate. Delta allows members to redeem miles for flights, upgrades and other options, but its rules reserve the right to change award prices and availability—including offering no award seats on some flights. Delta’s SkyMiles Program Rules and its program overview describe the program, but do not establish one guaranteed value for every mile.

For a trip you are actually considering, compare the cash fare with the award booking for the same route and dates. Include taxes and fees on the award, and account for differences in schedule, routing and fare conditions. A redemption that saves cash on a trip you want may be useful; a high miles price, inconvenient itinerary or unavailable seat may make paying cash—or not taking the trip—the better choice.
A practical comparison
- Find the cash price for the exact itinerary and travel dates.
- Check Delta’s current award quote for the same trip, including the taxes and fees due in cash.
- Compare the total cost and the itinerary details, including departure times, connections and fare conditions.
- Decide whether the miles required are a worthwhile use for this trip, rather than assuming they have the same value on every route.
Because Delta says program rules and award prices may change without notice, check the live quote when booking rather than relying on an old example or a general valuation.

How do Delta flights earn miles in 2026?
For eligible Delta-marketed flights or certain Delta-ticketed flights, Delta’s current rules list different mileage rates by fare experience. The rate is based on eligible U.S. dollars; government-imposed taxes and fees are excluded from that qualifying-spend calculation. The fare label and ticket eligibility matter, so not every Delta purchase earns at the same rate. See Delta’s current program rules for the applicable terms.

Is Medallion status worth pursuing for 2027?
Delta bases 2027 Medallion qualification on eligible activity from January 1 through December 31, 2026. The published thresholds are $5,000 MQDs for Silver, $10,000 for Gold, $15,000 for Platinum and $28,000 for Diamond. Delta says 2027 status lasts through January 31, 2028. MQDs reset each calendar year. Delta’s qualification page has the current thresholds and terms.

Status is a better fit to assess when you regularly fly Delta or its partners and expect to use the benefits attached to the tier. Compare the qualifying spend you realistically expect with the benefits you personally value. Do not treat status as automatically worthwhile just because you are close to a threshold.

How MQDs can be earned
Delta lists qualifying Delta and partner-marketed flight spending, certain eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card benefits, and qualifying Delta Vacations packages as MQD routes. Card Headstart and Boost are subject to eligibility and program terms; they do not mean unrestricted card spending earns status.
- Delta lists a $2,500 MQD Headstart per eligible card type per qualification year for eligible Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve and Reserve Business cards.
- For eligible card spending, Delta lists $1 MQD per $20 on Platinum cards and $1 MQD per $10 on Reserve cards.
- Qualifying Delta Vacations packages are another listed MQD route.
Before counting card benefits toward a status plan, confirm eligibility, exclusions and current card terms on Delta’s Medallion qualification page. Include any annual cost and the opportunity cost of spending in your decision; these MQD mechanics are program terms, not a reason by themselves to open a card or spend more.

How should you decide whether to focus on SkyMiles?
SkyMiles are most useful when your travel patterns and available award itineraries line up. If you fly Delta or its partners often, can use miles for routes you want, and find award prices that compare favorably with cash fares, earning may suit your plans. If award options do not fit your dates or you would need to spend more just to earn miles or chase status, the program may be less useful to you.
- For occasional travelers: Focus on whether a particular award saves money on a trip you would take anyway.
- For frequent Delta travelers: Estimate 2026 MQDs and weigh the 2027 benefits you expect to use against the spend needed to qualify.
- For cardholders: Compare eligible card costs and benefits you will actually use; do not assume everyday spending earns MQDs unless Delta’s current terms say it qualifies.
