No—not according to current U.S. employment projections. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects data scientist employment to grow 35% from 2025 to 2035 and says the integration of AI systems is one source of demand. That forecast does not guarantee any individual a job, or mean every task and specialty will remain unchanged.
What do the U.S. job projections show?
The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects U.S. data scientist employment to rise from 275,600 in 2025 to 371,000 in 2035, a 35% increase. It estimates an average of about 24,800 openings per year over that decade. These are projections for the occupational category, not a promise of hiring at any particular employer. A separate BLS publication reports 33.5% projected growth for 2024–2034. That figure belongs to a different projection window; it is not a competing measurement of the same decade as the 2025–2035 estimate. BLS points to the growing volume of data and its uses, demand for data-informed decisions, and the continued integration of AI systems into workflows. It expects data scientists to help businesses use AI and other technologies, make decisions, develop products, and market them. In this projection, AI is not described only as a substitute for data scientists; its adoption is also part of the stated reason employers will need people able to apply it.

That does not establish that AI will increase hiring at every company or preserve every current task. Tools may change how work is done, while employers may reorganize or combine responsibilities. The available outlook figures do not quantify which data scientist tasks will be automated or how effects differ by specialty, seniority, or employer.
How should you read global AI and jobs claims?
The World Economic Forum (WEF) offers a broader but different kind of evidence. Its Future of Jobs Report 2025 draws on a survey of more than 1,000 employers representing over 14 million workers across 22 industry clusters and 55 economies. WEF reports that 86% of surveyed employers expected AI and information-processing technologies to transform their business by 2030. This is a global employer expectation about business transformation—not a finding that 86% of jobs will be automated and not a U.S. forecast for data scientist employment. WEF also describes expected job creation and displacement as technology and other trends reshape work. Those are survey-based expectations through 2030, rather than realized outcomes. Keep the measures distinct when comparing headlines:
- Geography: BLS figures concern U.S. employment; WEF’s survey covers employers across 55 economies.
- Evidence type: BLS reports occupational employment projections; WEF reports employer expectations.
- Time window: The BLS figures cover 2025–2035 or 2024–2034; WEF’s cited technology expectation is through 2030.
- What is counted: Projected jobs in an occupation, anticipated business transformation, and tasks affected by tools are different measures.

The evidence supports a measured conclusion: data scientist is not projected to become obsolete as a U.S. occupation over the periods cited, but the projections cannot tell any one person how easy it will be to enter or advance in the field. BLS says a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field is typical preparation; some employers require or prefer graduate degrees. This describes common entry education, not a universal requirement for every job posting.
For career decisions, distinguish an occupation’s projected growth from the durability of a specific task or a particular role. Hiring conditions and responsibilities can vary among employers, and the cited forecasts do not resolve those differences. A claim that AI will eliminate data scientist jobs across the board—or that every current role is secure—goes beyond what these sources establish.
