Chegg is a real education technology company, so calling the entire service a scam is too broad. But there are documented reasons to be cautious: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a proposed $7.5 million settlement in 2025 over allegations that Chegg made subscriptions difficult to cancel and continued charging some customers after cancellation requests. Separately, a finalized 2023 FTC order addressed Chegg’s data-security practices after four breaches. If you are checking a charge, cancel through the official account flow, save the confirmation, and verify what happens on your next statement.
What the FTC cases do—and do not—show
The FTC describes Chegg as an education technology provider. Its actions document specific consumer-protection and data-security concerns; they do not establish that every Chegg subscription or charge is fraudulent.
Cancellation allegations announced in 2025
On September 15, 2025, the FTC said it had filed a complaint and proposed order in federal court. The agency alleged that Chegg made cancellation difficult, in some cases nearly impossible, and continued charging some consumers after they asked to cancel. The FTC said that since October 2020 Chegg had charged nearly 200,000 consumers after cancellation requests. It announced a proposed $7.5 million settlement and a requirement for simple cancellation mechanisms. That amount was part of the proposed settlement—not a promise of a $7.5 million payment to each customer or a general refund for all subscribers. Read the FTC’s September 15, 2025 announcement.
The FTC case page displayed the matter as “Pending” and listed “Last Updated September 19, 2025.” That is the status shown on that dated page, not a claim about the case’s status after that date. Check the FTC case page.

Data-security order finalized in 2023
In January 2023, the FTC announced that it had finalized an order with Chegg over what the agency called lax security practices. The FTC said four breaches exposed information about “about 40 million users and employees,” including email addresses, passwords, and sensitive information. The order required a comprehensive information-security program, limits on collecting and retaining data, multifactor authentication, and options for users to access and delete their data. The figure refers to people whose information was exposed across those breaches; it does not mean every person had the same information exposed, or that your account is currently compromised. Why a Chegg charge may recur
Chegg’s U.S. Terms of Use, last updated October 16, 2023, say certain memberships are billed in advance and may automatically renew. Under those terms, the saved payment method may be charged on the first day of each renewal period until the membership is canceled or terminated. A trial may require a valid payment card and become a paid membership at the promoted rate unless canceled before the trial ends. Chegg also says fees are generally non-refundable, including after cancellation, unless the purchase terms say otherwise. Read Chegg’s U.S. Terms of Use.

Those terms are not a universal contract for every Chegg service, purchase channel, or country. Check the terms and renewal details that applied when you signed up, including the trial end date, price, billing interval, and cancellation deadline. A recurring charge you did not expect is worth investigating, but the charge alone does not establish that it was unauthorized.

- Sign in to Chegg directly and open My Account.
- Select Orders and find the subscription.
- Choose Cancel Subscription.
- Complete the confirmation on the next page, then save the confirmation for your records.
Chegg says a confirmed cancellation prevents another charge, while access continues through the current billing period. Check your next card or bank statement to make sure the expected renewal did not occur. These instructions are specifically for Chegg Study; if you have a different Chegg service or subscribed through a third party, use the cancellation process for that service or purchase channel. What to do about an unexpected renewal or cancellation problem
- Check the records first. Compare the charge date and amount with your account’s order details, the terms shown at checkout, and any trial or renewal notice. Keep relevant emails, screenshots, statements, and cancellation confirmations.
- Cancel through the official route. Use the account flow above for Chegg Study. If the route does not match your service or subscription channel, contact Chegg through its official Help Center and retain the response.
- Ask Chegg to correct a charge you dispute. State the charge date, amount, account email, and the cancellation steps or confirmation you have. Do not assume the FTC settlement automatically refunds an individual charge.
- Contact your payment provider if needed. If you believe a charge was unauthorized or continued after a documented cancellation, ask your card issuer or bank about its dispute process and deadlines. Provide your records and explain what happened accurately.
FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said: “It harms the American people when companies fail to provide simple mechanisms to cancel recurring charges as Congress required in the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act.” The statement explains the agency’s view of cancellation obligations; it is not a finding that every Chegg charge is fraudulent.

How to spot a fake Chegg message
Chegg’s terms say it will never ask for your password or payment information through email or text. Treat a message requesting either as fraudulent: do not reply, enter details, or use its link. Instead, open Chegg by typing its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark, then check your account. Chegg’s terms include this warning.
If you entered a password on a suspicious page, change it through Chegg’s official site and change it anywhere else you reused it. If you supplied payment details, contact your card issuer or bank using the number on your card or its official app.
