Cash App itself is not a bank. Some Cash App Balance and Savings Balance funds may qualify for FDIC pass-through insurance when they are held at a partner bank and the account and recordkeeping requirements are met. That is not blanket insurance for every Cash App user or balance—and it does not protect against Cash App’s own failure.
When can a Cash App balance qualify for FDIC insurance?
Cash App’s U.S. Terms of Service, last updated June 4, 2026, say eligible Cash App Balance and Savings Balance funds may receive pass-through coverage through Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., Sutton Bank, and/or The Bancorp Bank, N.A. The terms require a qualifying Cash App Card or Sponsored Account, or that you sponsor one, along with the other applicable conditions. Having money in the app alone does not establish eligibility. Read Cash App’s U.S. Terms of Service.
Cash App says it is “a financial services platform, and not an FDIC-insured bank.” The distinction is that a partner bank—not Cash App—is the institution whose eligible deposit may be insured. The particular bank holding funds can depend on the product and Cash App’s arrangements; the terms say partner banks may be added or removed.

How pass-through coverage works
Pass-through insurance can cover the beneficial owners of money deposited at an insured bank through a third party. The FDIC says the funds must actually belong to the customer, the bank’s deposit records must disclose the agency or custodial relationship, and records must identify the owners and their interests. The FDIC evaluates whether these requirements are satisfied if a bank fails. FDIC: Pass-through Deposit Insurance Coverage.
Timing matters. Cash App warns that an external deposit can appear in the app before the partner bank receives it. If the bank fails while that money is still pending and has not reached the bank, the pending amount is not eligible for pass-through insurance. Cash App’s terms also distinguish partner-bank deposits from funds swept to third-party brokerages, which are not FDIC-insured deposits.

What the $250,000 limit means
Cash App’s terms state that eligible funds may be covered up to $250,000 per customer at each partner bank, if FDIC requirements and the terms are met. The limit is applied per depositor, per insured bank, and per ownership category—not per Cash App account. Your Cash App deposits at a particular bank are combined with your other deposits there held in the same legal capacity. Opening multiple Cash App accounts does not create a new $250,000 limit at the same bank in the same capacity. FDIC deposit insurance information.
Cash App’s terms describe sweep-network banks and state that coverage depends on your ownership capacity and other deposits at each bank. They also say customers currently cannot designate excluded banks or opt out of sweep banks because of system constraints. If your combined eligible deposits at a bank exceed the applicable limit, the excess may be at risk if that bank fails.

Which Cash App funds are excluded?
- Bitcoin and Investing holdings: Cash App’s terms exclude these from FDIC pass-through insurance. FDIC insurance applies to qualifying deposits, not non-deposit investment products.
- Money not yet received by a bank: An app-credited pending deposit may not qualify until the partner bank receives and holds it.
- Funds above the applicable limit: Amounts exceeding $250,000 at a bank after aggregation with same-capacity deposits may be exposed if that bank fails.
What if Cash App fails?
FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits if the insured bank holding them fails; it is not general protection against Cash App’s insolvency or bankruptcy. The FDIC states: “FDIC deposit insurance does not protect against the insolvency or bankruptcy of a nonbank company.” It also cautions that sending money to an app that works with an insured bank does not itself make the money insured: the funds must first be deposited at the bank and the other requirements must be satisfied. - Identify the balance type. The potential pass-through coverage described by Cash App applies to eligible Cash App Balance and Savings Balance funds, not Bitcoin or Investing holdings.
- Check the eligibility condition. Confirm that you have a qualifying Cash App Card or Sponsored Account, or sponsor one, and meet the other conditions in the current U.S. terms.
- Account for timing. Consider whether a deposit has reached and is held by a partner bank rather than merely appearing as pending in the app.
- Consider the bank and ownership category. The applicable limit is aggregated with your other deposits at that same bank in the same legal capacity; multiple app accounts do not raise it.
Because Cash App’s partner banks, eligibility terms, and sweep arrangements may change, check the current U.S. Terms of Service for the rules that apply to your account.
