A cruise-industry schedule analysis reports that Carnival calls at Costa Maya are set to drop significantly beginning in October 2026, but Carnival still lists the port as a Caribbean destination and has not formally announced that it is ending all visits. The reported pullback is not proof that a particular sailing has changed.
What the Costa Maya schedule change means
Costa Maya is the cruise port associated with Mahahual, in southern Quintana Roo, Mexico. A Cruise Spotlight analysis of published schedules reports a substantial reduction in Carnival visits beginning in October 2026. It characterizes this as a pullback, not a confirmed end to every Carnival call, and says Carnival had not formally announced its plans.
That distinction matters if you are budgeting for a cruise around a port day. A schedule trend cannot establish whether your ship will visit Costa Maya on your departure date. Check the exact itinerary for your ship and sailing.
Why the Royal Caribbean connection does not explain Carnival’s plans
Royal Caribbean says it recently became the owner and operator of the Port of Costa Maya. Its Mahahual destination site, updated in May 2026, describes the port’s work with Mexican authorities, local stakeholders, and residents, and says the port welcomes 2.3 million cruise visitors annually.

The available information does not establish that Royal Caribbean’s ownership change caused Carnival’s schedule reduction. Carnival has not provided a formal explanation in the cited schedule analysis, so the reason for the reported change is not confirmed.
How to check whether your Carnival cruise still stops there
- Open Carnival’s itinerary information for your booking and identify the ship and departure date.
- Review the exact port list for that sailing, rather than relying on a general destination page or a trend reported across schedules.
- If Costa Maya is important to your plans, recheck the itinerary closer to departure. A destination listing does not guarantee that a specific cruise will call there.
For example, Carnival’s published six-day Miami itinerary departing November 29, 2026 lists Celebration Key, Ocho Rios, and Grand Cayman. That example illustrates why the port list must be checked for the individual sailing; it does not establish the itinerary for other dates or ships.

How the published itineraries compare
Carnival’s August 27, 2024 announcement described Carnival Jubilee seven-day itineraries visiting Cozumel, Mahogany Bay, and Costa Maya before September 2026. This is a dated example, not a complete count of past or future calls. Carnival’s current Caribbean destination page still lists Costa Maya, but that general listing does not promise a stop on any particular sailing.
| Source or example | What it says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise Spotlight schedule analysis | Reports a substantial reduction in Carnival visits beginning October 2026; says Carnival had not formally stated its plans. | Secondary analysis of published schedules, not an official Carnival explanation or confirmation that all calls are ending. |
| Carnival Caribbean destination page | Lists Costa Maya as a destination. | Shows the destination remains listed generally; it does not guarantee a call on a specific cruise. |
| Carnival itinerary announcement, August 27, 2024 | Describes Carnival Jubilee seven-day routes including Costa Maya before September 2026. | A dated itinerary example, not a comprehensive schedule. |
What this means for your cruise budget
If your booking includes Costa Maya, use the itinerary attached to that specific sailing when estimating port-day expenses or making plans ashore. If the port is replaced or removed, shore plans tied to it may no longer fit; verify any change through Carnival’s current booking information before making nonrefundable arrangements. The reported schedule reduction alone does not tell you whether your booking will change.
