France is reportedly one of BYD’s leading candidates for another European assembly plant, alongside Spain. But the company has not confirmed a French factory, chosen a site, or announced an investment. September 2026 reporting says BYD expected to decide on a second European assembly location by the end of the year and preferred to buy and refurbish an existing plant.

Is BYD building a factory in France?

Not according to any confirmed announcement in the available reporting. France is being considered, but that is different from BYD selecting a location or committing to build or acquire a factory. Reports published in September 2026 named France and Spain as leading options; Italy was also mentioned as a possibility. CnEVPost’s September 17 report and Auto Plus’s September 20 report do not establish a selected country, specific site, signed agreement, or approved French project.

The distinction matters: a candidate location is not a chosen site; a chosen site is not necessarily an acquired plant; and acquisition or construction does not by itself mean production has started.

What BYD is reported to be considering

A second European assembly location

CnEVPost reported that BYD Europe adviser Alfredo Altavilla described a long-term need for three European assembly plants and one battery factory. The same report said France and Spain were leading candidates for a second assembly facility, with a decision expected by the end of 2026. Auto Plus also reported that France and Spain were ahead of Italy in the consideration. These are reported strategic comments and a decision horizon, not a published BYD construction schedule or formal investment notice.

Buying and refurbishing an existing plant

Both reports described a preference for acquiring and renovating an existing factory rather than building a new one from the ground up. That approach could make an available industrial site relevant, but the reports do not identify a French plant under negotiation or provide comparative costs, refurbishment timelines, or incentives for any candidate country.

Countries named in the reporting

Country Reported status What is not established
France One of the leading candidates, according to September 2026 reporting. No chosen site, signed deal, or confirmed BYD factory project is identified by the reports.
Spain Also named as a leading candidate. The reports do not establish a selected site or comparable investment terms.
Italy Reported as under consideration, behind France and Spain in the cited coverage. No selected site or comparable cost and incentive data are provided.

Choosing between countries would depend on factors such as the availability and condition of an existing plant, refurbishment costs and speed, suppliers, workforce, operating costs, market access, and applicable European manufacturing and trade rules. The cited reports do not provide enough comparable site-specific evidence to rank France, Spain, or Italy on those factors.

How the France possibility fits BYD’s earlier European plans

BYD announced in June 2025 that its Szeged, Hungary facility was its first European passenger-car factory and said the site was expected to be ready to start vehicle manufacturing by the end of 2025. That was a stated target at the time, not evidence of its current operating status. BYD’s announcement records the company’s plans as of June 2025.

In a September 2025 interview, BYD executive vice-president Stella Li said the company intended to begin Dolphin Surf production in Hungary by the end of that year, described a second plant under construction in Türkiye with a late-2026 target, and said a third was under consideration without a decision. Those were plans reported in 2025, not confirmation of current production or a later French commitment. Le Monde’s interview also reported that BYD had recorded 8,286 French registrations through August 2025, according to a company spokesperson, and had a target of 100 French dealerships by the end of 2025. Those figures are historical and should not be read as current sales or network totals.

What France’s EV policy does—and does not—tell us

In a 2023 response to a question in the National Assembly, the French government stated a national aim of producing two million electric vehicles annually by 2030 and described roughly €5 billion in France 2030 support for the automotive sector. These figures concern broader national policy and industry support; the response did not identify a BYD-specific grant, negotiated offer, or factory proposal. The government’s parliamentary response is policy context, not evidence that France has secured BYD’s investment.

What would confirm a French factory project?

A stronger basis for saying BYD is building in France would be an announcement or other reliable confirmation that identifies the project’s status. Readers should distinguish among these milestones:

Rank #4
BYD Song Plus AC Compressor Electric Car Air Conditioner Compatible For Hybrid Vehicles Model SA3EB-8103020 SA3EB8103020
  • Outstanding quietness, stable refrigeration capacity, reducing running noise and improving driving experience.
  • Small in size and light in weight, does not occupy too much space and does not affect the overall counterweight of the vehicle.
  • Durable and easy to maintain, wear-resistant, reduce running friction, reduce wear and prolong service life.
  • Firmly installed design, no shaking and abnormal noise during driving, and novices can try to operate.
  • BYD Song Plus AC Compressor Electric Car Air Conditioner Compatible For Hybrid Vehicles Model SA3EB-8103020 SA3EB8103020
  • Candidate: France is among the locations being considered.
  • Selection: BYD identifies France or a particular French site as its choice.
  • Commitment: The company or relevant authorities confirm an investment or transaction.
  • Acquisition or construction: A plant is acquired and refurbished, or a new facility is built.
  • Production: The site begins manufacturing vehicles or batteries.

The September 2026 reports support the first status—France as a candidate—but do not establish the later milestones. Until a company, government, or transaction source confirms more, “France is being considered” is more accurate than “BYD is building a factory in France.”
