Public reporting from 2026 does not show that Boeing’s F-47 production is behind schedule. The Air Force official overseeing the program, Gen. Dale White, described the work as on track in February 2026 and as ahead of schedule in late July 2026. Those are attributed status statements, not an independent audit. The public record also lacks a detailed baseline schedule that would let anyone measure a slip, so the claim of delay is unsupported. That does not mean the program is proven on time. The 2028 first flight remains a target.
What officials and reporters said in 2026
February 25: on track for a 2028 first flight
Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that White, identified as the Air Force Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Critical Major Weapon Systems, said the F-47 remained on track to fly in 2028. The same reporting said Boeing had the first F-47 airframe under production. White’s words were, “We’re doing exceptionally well,” and, later in the discussion, “Right now we are still on time and on target.”
July 29: ahead of schedule, per White
According to Stars and Stripes, which published its report on Aug. 3, 2026, White said the F-47 work was ahead of schedule. That report repeated the 2028 first-flight target and described 185 aircraft as the Air Force’s planned acquisition quantity. It also quoted White as saying, “The F-47 will fly in this administration.” A planned quantity and a political timeline are both statements of intent, not guarantees of delivery.
August 6: development phase, secondary coverage
A TechRadar Pro report from Aug. 6, 2026 described the F-47 as being in engineering and manufacturing development, with a 2028 first-flight target and limited test aircraft in production during this phase. This is secondary reporting. It corroborates the official status but does not replace program records.

Why a production airframe does not prove a delay
The headline’s word “already” implies a measured slip against a published plan. The reporting shows activity, not timing. Building a test airframe during engineering and manufacturing development is normal, and a program can be fabricating aircraft years before its first flight. An airframe in production tells you the program has moved past paper design. It does not tell you whether a milestone has moved.
The reporting also contains no F-47-specific delay figure. Broader statistics on defense programs running late are not a substitute, because they describe other programs with different baselines and cannot be applied to this one.

What evidence would be needed to show a delay
A credible delay finding requires four items that the 2026 reporting does not provide:
- The original milestone, with its date, such as the first-flight date set at contract award or in an official program document.
- The revised milestone and its date.
- The date on which the change was made, so the slip can be measured.
- An attributable explanation from the Air Force, Boeing, or an independent reviewer.
Without these, a schedule claim is a judgment about the program, not a documented fact.

The F-47 facts readers should keep straight
The F-47 is the next-generation Air Force air-superiority fighter intended to replace the F-22. It is associated with the wider Next Generation Air Dominance effort. The table below separates what has been reported from what has not.

| Schedule status | On track (February 2026); ahead of schedule (July 29, 2026), both as stated by White | Air & Space Forces Magazine, Feb. 25, 2026; Stars and Stripes, Aug. 3, 2026 |
| First airframe | Under production as a test airframe | Air & Space Forces Magazine, Feb. 25, 2026 |
| Acquisition quantity | 185 aircraft, a planned figure rather than a final or delivered number | Stars and Stripes, Aug. 3, 2026 |

Why Boeing’s other problems do not answer the question
Boeing has faced well-documented difficulties on other programs, including commercial aircraft and the KC-46 tanker. Those programs have separate contracts, schedules and causes. The reporting cited here does not connect them to F-47 timing, so using them to explain an F-47 slip would be an inference without evidence.

Limits of the public record
The most recent reporting cited here is from early August 2026, so anything after that date is outside this assessment. Officials’ statements are attributed assessments, and public sources cannot rule out slippage that has not been disclosed. Those limits cut both ways: they mean the delay claim cannot be confirmed, and they mean the on-time status cannot be independently verified either. Readers who need a firm answer should look for official program records, such as Air Force budget justifications or congressional testimony, that state a dated milestone and any revisions.
For a finance reader, the practical takeaway is simple. Treat a 2028 first flight and a 185-aircraft plan as official targets. Wait for dated milestone records before treating either as a fact.
