Not about the technology—but potentially about how much it has already changed everyday Bitcoin payments. Lightning moves payments through off-chain channels while relying on Bitcoin’s base layer to open and settle them. It can expand Bitcoin’s payment capacity, and some businesses have integrated it. But public capacity and reports of business interest do not prove that payments are broadly used, consistently reliable, or effortless for ordinary users.
What Lightning does—and what it does not do
Lightning is a network of payment channels built on Bitcoin. Two participants fund a channel with a Bitcoin transaction, then update their respective balances off-chain as they pay one another. They can later settle the latest channel state on Bitcoin’s base layer. Payments can also pass through a series of connected channels, rather than requiring every payer to open a direct channel with every recipient.

The Lightning Network overview describes the system as using blockchain smart-contract functionality to enable payments across a network of participants. In practical terms, the base layer provides the mechanism for opening and closing channels and enforcing their final state; routine channel payments do not each become separate Bitcoin transactions. That is the source of Lightning’s potential to handle more payments without putting every one directly on-chain.
This design is not the same as making Bitcoin’s base layer process more transactions per second. Nor does a theoretical capacity claim establish actual network throughput. A Lightning payment still depends on a usable route, available liquidity, and the wallet or service through which the user pays.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Is Lightning actually being used?
There is evidence of business activity, but it does not amount to a complete count of users or successful purchases. Fidelity Digital Assets’ February 19, 2025 report, “The Lightning Network: Expanding Bitcoin Use Cases”, says more businesses integrated Lightning in 2024 than in prior years and argues that the network has developed beyond peer-to-peer payments. The report also draws on proprietary data supplied by Voltage. That is evidence of ecosystem activity and business interest, not a market-wide census of merchants, consumers, or retail payments.
A different kind of evidence appears in a U.S. Bitcoin Trust annual filing published in 2026. Its risk disclosure describes conditions as of December 31, 2025, saying wallets and intermediaries supporting Lightning-like technologies had not seen wide-scale use by that date. The filing is a securities disclosure, not a purpose-built adoption survey or technical audit. Its caution and Fidelity’s report address different measures, so they are not direct contradictions: more integrations can coexist with limited use at scale.

The key question is not whether anyone accepts Lightning. It is whether ordinary users can make repeatable payments across enough merchants and routes, with enough reliability and convenience, to make it a dependable everyday option. The cited adoption evidence does not settle that question.

Why public capacity is not a measure of adoption
Fidelity’s full report estimated publicly visible Lightning capacity at 5,358.50 BTC as of January 2025. The report explains that private or unannounced channels are excluded and that total capacity is unknown; see the full report.

Capacity is the bitcoin committed to channels visible in the public network graph. It does not tell you how many payments were made, how many were retail purchases, how often payments succeeded, or how evenly funds were positioned for routes. Private channels also make the public figure incomplete. So capacity can show that funds have been committed to visible channels, but it cannot by itself prove broad adoption or dependable payment performance. Comparing BTC capacity across dates in dollar terms also requires accounting for Bitcoin’s changing price.
How reliable are Lightning payments?
Routing is a real operational challenge: a payment needs a connected path with sufficient liquidity. A 2020 working paper by Finnegan Waugh and Ralph Holz found an inverse relationship between payment volume and success in its study and reported that, under the studied conditions, at best about one third of destination nodes could be reached. The authors also discussed stale network information and trade-offs involving reliability, privacy, and decentralization. Those findings are historical, not a current success rate: the available sources do not establish how often present-day Lightning payments succeed. Read the study as a dated account of limitations, not a forecast of what a payment will do today: Waugh and Holz’s 2020 working paper.

For a user, the experience depends on the wallet and route, as well as liquidity and channel arrangements that may not be obvious at checkout. A successful payment in one wallet, location, or transaction size would not establish universal reliability. The evidence cited here does not support a current, apples-to-apples comparison of Lightning success rates across wallets or regions.

It can avoid recording each routine channel payment as a separate base-layer transaction, but that does not mean every Lightning payment is cheaper or channel management is free. Users and services may face costs associated with opening or closing channels, routing payments, placing liquidity, and operating wallets or intermediaries. The sources cited here do not provide a current, like-for-like fee benchmark that includes those costs.

Keep Bitcoin’s on-chain fees separate from Lightning fees. A 2026 Bitcoin Trust filing reports that Bitcoin handled approximately five transactions per second as of December 31, 2025. It also gives base-layer average daily transaction fees ranging from $0.31 on December 7, 2025 to $124.17 on April 20, 2024, within the filing’s stated period from January 1, 2023 through December 7, 2025; it reports an average daily fee of $0.65 on December 31, 2025. These are filing-reported Bitcoin transaction figures, not Lightning payment fees or a measure of total Lightning operating costs. The filing is available through the SEC-hosted trust filing.
Lightning versus paying directly on Bitcoin
| Question | Lightning | Bitcoin base layer |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the payment recorded? | Channel balances update off-chain; channels can be settled on-chain. | The transaction is recorded on Bitcoin’s base layer. |
| What affects the payment path? | Channel connectivity, route liquidity, wallet design, and any service provider involved. | On-chain transaction inclusion and the prevailing network conditions. |
| What does the cited evidence establish? | Fidelity reported 5,358.50 BTC of public capacity as of January 2025, while noting private channels are excluded and total capacity is unknown. That is not a payment count or success rate. | A 2026 trust filing reported approximately five transactions per second as of December 31, 2025, and historical base-layer fee figures. These do not establish a universal cost for a particular transaction. |
Neither option is a universal winner. A useful comparison for a particular payment depends on the amount, the user’s wallet and route, setup or custody choices, and whether the user values channel-based off-chain payments or a transaction recorded directly on Bitcoin. Privacy and reliance on intermediaries can also differ with the setup. The evidence here is not enough to rank Lightning against other Bitcoin layers or card networks.
So, is Bitcoin kidding itself?
Lightning is a genuine scaling approach: it lets participants transact off-chain while keeping Bitcoin available for channel settlement and enforcement. The case for its potential is not imaginary, and Fidelity’s account of business integrations is evidence of real development. But the strongest public capacity figure is not a usage measure; the available adoption evidence is partial and differently framed; and the cited routing study is too old to establish current reliability.
