Is ASUS a Good Laptop Brand? What to Know Before You Buy

ASUS can be a good laptop choice, but its broad lineup varies in quality and value. Compare the exact model, upgrade options, and local warranty terms.

Yes—ASUS can be a good laptop brand, but the exact model and your local warranty matter more than the logo. ASUS offers everything from budget Chromebooks and everyday Vivobooks to premium Zenbooks, business laptops, creator workstations, and gaming systems. That breadth brings useful choices, but quality and value can vary across the lineup, and some buyers report frustrating warranty repairs. Compare the specific configuration you plan to buy, then verify its upgrade options and regional support terms.

What ASUS’s reputation does—and doesn’t—tell you

Independent reviewer RTINGS describes ASUS as having a broad lineup and generally good serviceability, while also noting uneven quality between tiers, weaker value or quality in some budget products, and user complaints about warranty repairs. These are assessments of a varied product range, not a controlled reliability test of every current model or a prediction that a particular laptop will fail. RTINGS says higher-end Zenbook and ROG models tend to be feature-rich, while cheaper Chromebooks and budget products may involve compromises. Its recommendations page has visible update notes through March 2025, so check current model availability and reviews before relying on a specific recommendation: RTINGS’ ASUS laptop reviews.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability article explains its survey and prediction method, but the accessible result does not show ASUS’s specific score or comparative rank. That means the evidence here does not establish that ASUS is more or less reliable than competing brands overall. Consumer Reports says its 2026 estimates draw on surveys of 75,923 portable computers bought new from 2019 through 2025, with a model estimating the likelihood of problems by the end of the third ownership year. Across the sampled laptops—not ASUS alone—16 percent reportedly broke or stopped working as they should within three years; nearly six in ten broken laptops were taken in for repair, and 22 percent of laptops bought in that period had an extended warranty or service contract. Those figures provide context for laptop ownership, not an ASUS failure rate: Consumer Reports’ 2026 laptop reliability report.

Which ASUS laptop families fit different needs?

RTINGS groups ASUS laptops into families with different intended uses. Names and configurations change, so treat these as broad orientation rather than a guarantee about every machine in a line.

Family General positioning described by RTINGS What to check on the exact model
Chromebook ChromeOS laptops; budget products may involve compromises. Operating system, memory and storage, screen quality, and whether your required apps run in ChromeOS.
Vivobook Budget-to-midrange productivity. Processor, screen, chassis, memory configuration, and price against similarly equipped alternatives.
Zenbook Midrange-to-high-end productivity. Display, portability, ports, battery performance, and whether the premium features justify the price.
ExpertBook Business-oriented. Workplace requirements, support terms, ports, security features, and service availability in your region.
ProArt Studiobook Designed for color-critical work. Display characteristics and whether the exact panel meets your color workflow needs.
TUF Gaming Budget gaming. Graphics performance, cooling, display, and the trade-off between gaming power and portability.
ROG Midrange-to-premium gaming. Exact graphics and processor configuration, screen, thermals, battery expectations, and price.
BR Listed as a distinct ASUS family by RTINGS; the cited description does not specify its positioning. Confirm the model’s intended market, specifications, and support terms before comparing it.

ASUS also experiments with dual-screen and other unusual form factors. Such designs can be useful if they solve a real workflow problem, but compare their weight, battery life, software behavior, and price with a conventional laptop rather than assuming novelty is an advantage.

How to compare a specific ASUS laptop before buying

Compare complete configurations at similar prices. A brand-level verdict cannot tell you whether a particular screen, processor, memory amount, or support package is worth paying for.

  • Charge with Speed Vivobook 17 supports fast charging which allows you to charge a low battery to 60% in as little as 49 minutes, so you can be up and running quicker than ever!
  • Workload and performance: Match the processor and graphics hardware to your work. Browsing and office tasks differ from sustained gaming, video editing, or other creative workloads.
  • Display and form factor: Check screen size, panel type, brightness, refresh rate, touch support, and whether a 2-in-1 or dual-screen layout is useful to you.
  • Portability and battery: Look for independent tests of the exact model. Gaming performance can sharply reduce battery life, so do not transfer expectations from a thin productivity laptop to a gaming machine.
  • Build and serviceability: Inspect the chassis, keyboard, and ports. RTINGS says many ASUS laptops are generally serviceable and that many budget models offer user-replaceable memory or storage; this is not true of every configuration, so confirm what can actually be replaced or upgraded.
  • Total price and value: Compare like-for-like processor, memory, storage, screen, and included support. A cheaper listing may have a weaker display or less memory, making headline prices misleading.
  • Warranty and local repair: Check standard coverage, authorized repair access, exclusions, and parts availability where you live. A warranty is only useful if its terms and service route work for your location and model.

RTINGS compares ASUS with Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, and Acer, but the best choice depends on the model and your needs. Use current reviews for any head-to-head decision rather than treating a family name or a brand reputation as a substitute for the actual specifications.

How to check ASUS warranty and support terms

Coverage is not uniform worldwide. ASUS says Premium Care availability varies by country and product, and the purchase timing, exclusions, and covered services depend on the package. Its general description says Premium Care can extend a warranty period, expand coverage, and add protection, but that does not mean every package includes the same services. See ASUS Premium Care – Introduction for the official terms; the page was last updated May 25, 2026.

For notebooks, commercial notebooks, and gaming notebooks, ASUS says an extension package must be purchased and activated during the product’s warranty period, with total warranty limited to a maximum of three years. Other services—such as local accidental damage protection, battery service, hard-drive retention, or onsite service—generally have a 180-day purchase-and-activation window. The general extension excludes software, batteries, peripherals, free accessories, and customer-induced damage unless the specific package terms say otherwise. Verify the terms for your country and model before paying for an extension.

ASUS’s US support page provides model lookup for drivers, manuals, and warranty information, and links to repair services, self-repair information, diagnostics, and parts resources. Use the model or serial number to locate the documents that apply to your laptop: ASUS USA Official Support. Support options and terms may differ outside the United States.

Should you buy an ASUS laptop?

ASUS is worth considering if a particular model fits your work, budget, and support needs. Its range includes productivity, business, creator, and gaming machines, and its serviceability can be an advantage when the specific laptop allows useful upgrades. The cautions are meaningful too: quality and value vary across tiers, warranty-repair complaints exist, and the evidence cited here does not provide an ASUS-specific reliability rate.

Choose based on the exact configuration, current independent reviews, upgradeability, and warranty terms where you live. ASUS’s 2024 product guide includes dated market-position claims—for example, rankings limited to particular regions and quarters—but those are historical manufacturer claims, not evidence of current quality or reliability: ASUS Consumer Product Guide 2024.
