No—the cited study did not find one bottled-water brand free of microplastics. Qian and colleagues reported micro- and nanoplastic particles in samples from all three brands they tested. The brands were anonymized, and the researchers did not establish that any named product is particle-free.
What did the bottled-water study actually find?
In a paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on January 8, 2024, Naixin Qian, Xin Gao, Xiaoqi Lang, and coauthors described a method for imaging and identifying tiny plastic particles. In its bottled-water demonstration, the team analyzed products from three brands purchased at the same time from one large retailer. The results identify the samples only as brands A, B, and C—not by consumer brand name. Read the PNAS paper.
The researchers detected particles across all three samples. Their estimated average concentration was 2.4 ± 1.3 × 105 particles per liter, or about 240,000 per liter, with roughly 90% classified as nanoplastics. These are the authors’ estimates for their samples and method—not a universal average for bottled water, a regulatory limit, or a comparison of every brand on the market.
The paper also reports an estimated particle mass of about 10 ng/L. Particle count and mass describe different things: a large number of very small particles can correspond to a relatively small total mass. The study’s count should not be read as a measure of health risk by itself.

Why did a headline say one brand had none?
The claim that one tested brand had no detectable plastics conflicts with the primary paper’s account: particles were detected in all three tested brand samples. The researchers’ main text does not identify a particle-free brand, and its anonymized labels do not let readers match A, B, or C to a product on store shelves. A later headline cannot supply evidence that the study itself does not report.
The paper also notes a control limitation: “With no access to plastic-free water in the lab, the Anodisc filters are prepared and measured in the same way as blank control.” That caveat belongs in any account of how the samples and controls were handled; it does not turn any of the tested brands into a verified plastic-free option.

How did the researchers look for such small particles?
Qian and colleagues developed hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy paired with an automated algorithm that matched measured spectra against reference materials. The paper describes demonstrated detection of nanoplastics below 100 nm. For the bottled-water analysis, its particle-size statistical analysis reports measurements down to the 100–200 nm range. These details describe the method’s demonstrated capabilities and the study’s analysis; they do not mean every object in the water was identified.
Across the three brands, the researchers reported an average of 78 to 103 particles in each 0.2 mm × 0.2 mm image field. Their chemical matching used a reference library of seven polymers:

The polymer mix differed among the samples, with PA appearing to be a common major contributor by particle count. But the library matched only roughly 10% of imaged particles or dots. The reported concentration is therefore an estimate based on the researchers’ approach, while most imaged objects were not matched to one of those seven polymer standards. That limitation matters when interpreting how completely the study chemically characterized what it saw.
Can this study tell you which brand to buy?
No. The researchers tested three anonymized brands in a limited sample set, not a representative selection of all bottled water. The paper cannot rank named products, establish that one brand is cleaner than another for consumers, or show that a brand sold today has the same particle levels as the sampled product.

The team discusses packaging materials such as PET and PE and treatment equipment such as polyamide membranes as possible sources of particles. Those are proposed pathways, not proof that a particular bottle, cap, filter, or manufacturing step caused the particles in a specific sample. The study does not test home filters or reusable bottles as solutions.

No. This was an analytical detection study, not a study of people’s health outcomes. Finding particles in a water sample does not establish that drinking it causes illness, and the paper does not provide a brand-specific safety ranking. The World Health Organization’s 2019 technical brief discusses microplastics in drinking water in the context of health-risk assessment; it does not certify any bottled-water brand as free of microplastics. The defensible conclusion is narrower: this method detected micro- and nanoplastic particles in the three tested samples, but the study neither identifies a particle-free brand nor determines the health consequences of drinking those samples.
