Which accommodation makes the fare worthwhile?
Amtrak offers coach seating and Superliner sleeping-car accommodations. Superliner roomette
A roomette has two seats that convert into upper and lower beds. Amtrak lists shared restroom and shower facilities, a First Class attendant, lounge access, priority boarding and complimentary meals among its roomette benefits. Those inclusions can make the roomette more appealing if you value a bed, privacy and meals as part of the journey; weigh them against the additional fare shown for your dates. The Southwest Chief has a Sightseer Lounge, a dining car and cafe service. Amtrak lists Traditional Dining on the route; menu offerings and prices can change. Roomette fares include meals, while coach travelers can purchase cafe food. Check current dining information before you plan around a particular menu or price. Could a destination connection improve the value?
The train can be one part of a longer itinerary rather than the entire trip. Amtrak describes a connection bus to the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, Arizona, and a shuttle from Lamy to Santa Fe hotels. The Lamy shuttle requires advance reservations. - Choose your dates and party size. Search the actual itinerary you plan to take; a general price estimate would not establish what your tickets will cost.
- Compare coach and roomette quotes. Decide whether the roomette’s bed, privacy and included meals are worth the fare difference for your budget and travel needs.
- Account for the time aboard. The scheduled Los Angeles–Chicago trip is roughly 43 hours, so consider whether you want a slow rail journey or need to arrive sooner.
- Include your onward plans. If you intend to continue to Santa Fe or the Grand Canyon, verify the relevant shuttle or connection and any reservation requirement.
The strongest case for the Southwest Chief is for travelers who want a long rail experience, value the lounge and dining spaces, or plan to use the train as part of a wider trip. If speed or the lowest possible travel cost is the priority, the schedule and the date-specific fare comparison deserve more weight than the onboard amenities.
