Amazon’s business is growing, but its latest annual results also show how heavy investment can weigh on reported free cash flow.
What does a dated valuation estimate say?
Morningstar’s July 23, 2026, pre-earnings analysis described Amazon as moderately undervalued relative to its long-term fair-value estimate of $280 per share. It also cited a negative 1% free-cash-flow yield and said AWS capacity expansion was constraining cash flow. Those figures and the undervaluation judgment belong to Morningstar’s model and that date; they are not a consensus valuation, a verified intrinsic value, or necessarily current now. The estimate depends on assumptions about future results, and the gap between estimated value and market price changes as either assumptions or the share price changes. How is Amazon’s business performing?
Amazon reported $716.9 billion in consolidated net sales for 2025, 12% more than in 2024. Net income was $77.7 billion and operating income was $80.0 billion. The results show a large, growing business, but sales growth by itself does not establish that the stock is attractively priced.
AWS is an important source of operating income
Amazon Web Services (AWS) generated $128.7 billion in 2025 sales, up 20% year over year, and $45.6 billion in operating income. By comparison, North America reported $426.3 billion in sales and $29.6 billion in operating income. This distinction matters: a segment’s share of revenue does not necessarily reflect its contribution to operating profit. Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K provides the company’s annual and segment results.

Quarterly growth is a useful update, not a forecast
In the second quarter of 2026, Amazon reported year-over-year growth of 20% in consolidated net sales and 37% in AWS sales. These faster rates offer a more recent snapshot of business momentum than the 2025 annual figures, but a single quarter cannot establish that the same pace will continue or that the share price is below fair value. Why did free cash flow fall while sales grew?
Amazon reported $11.2 billion in free cash flow for 2025, down from $38.2 billion in 2024. Over the same period, net purchases of property and equipment rose to $128.3 billion from $77.7 billion. The juxtaposition shows why revenue and earnings growth do not automatically translate into stronger near-term cash flow: substantial investment can absorb cash as the company expands capacity and other assets.

Amazon defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less net purchases of property and equipment. The company cautions that this measure has limitations and should be considered alongside the full statement of cash flows, not as a substitute for it. Amazon says its financial focus is “on long-term, sustainable growth in free cash flow.” For investors, the key question is whether current investment can support future cash generation—and how much time and spending that would require. What could make the stock look like a bargain—or not?
- Price relative to value: Compare the current share price with updated estimates, and identify whose model produced each estimate and when. Morningstar’s July 2026 $280 figure is one dated view, not a fixed value.
- Profitability behind the growth: Consider segment operating income as well as sales growth. AWS’s 2025 contribution helps explain why segment mix matters.
- Cash generation after investment: Look at operating cash flow, capital spending and the company’s stated free-cash-flow measure together. A large investment program may support expansion, but its future returns are uncertain.
- Durability of momentum: Treat Q2 2026 growth as a reported result for that quarter, not a promise that the pace will persist.
- Business and market risks: Amazon warns that its listed risk factors are not exhaustive and that known or unknown events could adversely affect its business, results, cash flows, liquidity or stock price. Read the company’s current filings rather than relying on an old risk summary.
A practical way to assess Amazon’s valuation
- Update the inputs. Check the share price and the latest company filings before using any fair-value estimate; Morningstar’s July 2026 assessment predates later market and business changes.
- Separate growth from value. Review sales, operating income and segment performance, then ask what future results the current price already assumes.
- Test the cash-flow assumptions. Consider whether investment spending is likely to remain high and what level of future cash generation would justify the valuation. Do not treat one year’s free-cash-flow figure as a complete picture.
- Read the risk disclosures. Use Amazon’s latest annual and quarterly filings to understand risks that could alter growth, spending, profitability or the share price.
No single growth rate or fair-value estimate resolves whether Amazon is a bargain. The judgment turns on the price paid today, the cash flows investors expect over time, and the risks to those expectations.
