The A220 family Airbus documents consists of the A220-100 and A220-300. A larger version could fill a useful capacity gap, but without a confirmed design, performance figures, or launch plan, it is too soon to call it either a masterstroke or a proven threat to the A320neo.
Is Airbus really making an A220-500?
Not as an announced or approved aircraft in Airbus’s official materials cited here. Airbus’s A220 Facts and Figures — June 2026, with figures current through the end of May 2026, describes the -100 and -300. The company calls the A220 family “the ideal complement to the A320 Family.” That is Airbus’s positioning for the existing family, not confirmation that it plans to stretch the aircraft.
The distinction matters because a high-density configuration for the existing A220-300 is not the same thing as a new, longer -500. Airbus’s June 2026 technical table lists high-density capacities of 135 seats for the -100 and 160 for the -300, each marked “certification to come.” Those figures do not establish an A220-500, nor do they show that those configurations are certified or in service.
How many passengers could an A220-500 carry?
Airbus has not published a confirmed seating capacity or range for an A220-500 in the cited official materials. Any specific -500 seat count or range should therefore be treated as a proposal or estimate, not an Airbus specification. The current aircraft provide a factual point of comparison:

Seat counts are not a complete measure of what an aircraft can do: cabin layout, passenger mix, baggage and cargo, route length, and operating conditions all matter. A larger fuselage could create a capacity step between the A220-300 and A320neo, but whether it would preserve the range and payload airlines need is unknown until Airbus publishes a configuration and performance data.
Would an A220-500 replace the A320neo?
It might compete for some airline decisions, but the evidence does not establish that it would replace the A320neo. Airbus’s published typical two-class ranges overlap at the upper end of the A220-300 and lower end of the A320neo. A stretch could, in principle, create more overlap. That is a portfolio possibility, not a documented market outcome.

The decision for an airline would turn on more than the number of seats. It would need to compare performance and cost on the routes it actually flies, as well as fleet and production considerations:
- Capacity and mission: How many passengers and how much cargo could the aircraft carry at the required range? No -500 figures are established.
- Economics: What would fuel and other operating costs look like per seat on comparable routes and under comparable assumptions? The cited Airbus materials do not provide a head-to-head comparison or economics for a -500.
- Fleet commonality: Airbus says A320neo versions have over 95% airframe commonality with A320ceo versions in its FY2025 report. That is a stated advantage for the A320 family; the cited material does not establish what commonality, training, maintenance, or spares benefits an A220-500 would offer existing A220 or A320 operators.
- Industrial feasibility: Airbus would need to define development, certification, engine, and production plans. None is confirmed for a -500 in the official sources cited here.
- Portfolio effect: Airbus would need to judge whether a new size attracts routes and demand that current aircraft do not serve as well, or shifts orders from its own A320neo family. Neither outcome is established.
Why Airbus’s fuel-saving figures do not settle the comparison
Airbus reports 25% lower A220 fuel burn per seat versus previous-generation aircraft in its June 2026 A220 facts sheet. Its FY2025 report says the A320neo offers up to 20% fuel savings per seat versus earlier A320 family aircraft. These claims use different baselines, and neither is a like-for-like test of an A220 against an A320neo. Neither figure describes a hypothetical A220-500, so they cannot show which aircraft would cost less to operate.

What Airbus’s order book and production disclosures show
The existing A220 family has a substantial order and delivery history, but those numbers are not evidence of -500 orders. Airbus’s June 2026 facts sheet reports 1,109 historical A220 orders, 517 aircraft delivered, and a backlog of 592 at the end of May 2026. Airbus’s Orders and Deliveries page, current through the end of August 2026, reports 1,110 A220-family orders and 542 deliveries. The different totals are for different reporting dates; both concern the family, not a confirmed -500 programme.
For scale, Airbus’s August 2026 Orders and Deliveries figures list 20,418 A320-family orders and 12,841 deliveries. Those are family totals, not a direct measure of demand for the A320neo alone and not evidence that a new A220 would take orders from it.

Production is another part of the strategic question. In its FY2025 report, Airbus said Pratt & Whitney’s failure to commit to the number of engines ordered was negatively affecting the A320 ramp-up trajectory. The same report set a target of 13 A220 aircraft per month in 2028. That is a dated company target, not a completed rate or guarantee. An additional A220 variant could not be judged separately from the engine supply and production capacity needed to build it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would make an A220-500 a masterstroke—or a threat?
It could be a masterstroke if Airbus could offer airlines a compelling capacity option between the current A220-300 and A320neo, with useful range and payload, attractive costs, and production capacity that supports deliveries. It could threaten A320neo sales if airlines found that option better suited to missions they otherwise would have assigned to the A320neo. Conversely, a stretch might have limited appeal if its performance, cost, or delivery position did not work for those missions. These are conditional strategic outcomes, not confirmed results.

The decisive evidence would be an Airbus announcement establishing the programme and publishing its configuration, range and payload, engine choice, development and certification schedule, and customer commitments. Until then, airline buyers and readers should distinguish discussion of a possible stretch from Airbus’s published aircraft specifications.
