Airbus is considering a larger A220, commonly called the A220-500, but it has not approved or launched the aircraft. The latest company statement and reporting cited here, from February and June 2026, describe a concept under study, with no decision on timing, specifications, or entry into service. Any launch after June 2026 would not be reflected in this article.
What Airbus has said
The clearest official statement came at Airbus’s 2026 annual press conference on February 19, 2026. CEO Guillaume Faury said:
“For the A220, a lot on our plate as well with the integration of the Spirit AeroSystems work packages and what it means for the A220 programme. So, we keep ramping up, but we hear loud and clear from the market that there is a strong potential for what is called a 500. That would make plenty of sense. We had the opportunity to say earlier that it’s more a question of when than if, while we are not yet at the when, and we are not yet there either. As you have seen, we have plenty of things to do, and we want to time things one by one, but this is also something we are seriously considering.”
Read carefully, the statement makes three claims. Airbus hears interest from the market, it is seriously considering a larger variant, and it has not reached a decision point. It does not set out a launch decision, a seating count, or a range figure. Faury also named two present-day demands on the program: ramping up current production and integrating the Spirit AeroSystems work packages.

Why a larger A220 could make financial sense
Reuters reported on June 5, 2026 that a larger A220 could help Airbus renegotiate supplier contracts and lower production costs, which would improve the economics of the whole program. This is reported analysis rather than an Airbus announcement, so it should be read as a possible benefit, not a plan Airbus has published.
The logic is about scale. A bigger airframe spreads fixed development and production costs over more seats, and a higher production volume gives a company more leverage with suppliers. For a program that has accumulated a meaningful order book, that leverage can matter as much as the aircraft’s cabin layout.
Airbus also describes the A220 family as an ideal complement to the A320 family. A larger member could extend the family toward higher-capacity routes. Reuters reported, however, that Airbus was also studying whether a larger A220 could cannibalize sales of the A320neo, so the benefit to the portfolio is not one-directional.

The existing program gives the variant a base to build on. Airbus’s June 2026 fact sheet reports the following figures as of the end of May 2026:

- 1,109 historical A220 orders
- 517 aircraft delivered
- 25 operators
- 592 aircraft in backlog
- 93 A220 deliveries in calendar year 2025
These numbers show that the current family has commercial scale. They do not show that customers want a new, larger variant.
Where the current A220 stands
The current family, according to Airbus’s June 2026 fact sheet, consists of the A220-100 and A220-300. Airbus describes the aircraft as purpose-built for the 100 to 160 seat segment, with a maximum range of 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km).

A separate Airbus announcement on May 6, 2026 said AirAsia ordered 150 A220-300 aircraft. Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner said: “The A220 will provide an optimal platform for AirAsia, combining low operating costs with the range that will enable the carrier to open new routes across Asia and beyond.” That order is for the existing A220-300. It is not a commitment to buy a future larger variant.
What could slow or complicate a decision
Reuters reported on June 5, 2026 that Airbus had become less certain about launching a larger variant soon. Its reporting cited three points:
- Leasing interest: muted interest from major leasing companies, which buy and finance much of the market’s aircraft.
- Range and performance: debate inside the industry about the aircraft’s range and performance at larger sizes.
- Timing: a senior Airbus executive said a launch at that summer’s Farnborough Airshow was not probable, though a launch later in 2026 had not been ruled out.
An Airbus spokesperson told Reuters: “We are studying all the options; no decisions have been made.” Faury’s remarks add a capacity constraint. Airbus is focused on the current program and on absorbing the Spirit AeroSystems work, so a new variant competes for engineering and management attention.

What is not yet established
The sources cited here do not establish the A220-500’s seating, range, engine configuration, production rate, launch date, or entry-into-service date. Readers should treat any figure for these items as speculation unless Airbus publishes it. Reuters’ cost, leasing, and portfolio details are reported claims and should be attributed to Reuters.
If Airbus does move forward, the evidence needed to judge the aircraft would include certified seating and cabin layout, range at a stated payload, operating cost per seat, production cost and rate, and engine availability. A comparison with the A320neo would also need to show whether the larger A220 adds new markets or mainly shifts demand between Airbus products.

Aircraft programs produce a long run of news before any official launch. Headlines often blur the stages, and the stage determines how much weight a claim deserves. A practical sequence:
Best Value
- Purpose & Use – Perfect for collectors, aviation enthusiasts, or as a display piece, this snap-fit model assembles quickly without glue and includes a sturdy display stand
- Perfect Size – At 1/200 scale, the model measures approximately 13 inches long with a 12 ½-inch wingspan—large enough to impress while fitting neatly on shelves or desks

- Market sounding: the company says customers have expressed interest. This is the stage the A220-500 is at, based on the statements cited here.
- Serious study: the company says it is evaluating the idea and gathering business-case information, with no decision yet.
- Launch decision: the company announces it will build the aircraft, usually with a specification and an entry-into-service target.
- Orders and supplier commitments: customers sign firm orders, and suppliers receive contracts sized to the program.
A headline that says Airbus “is creating” an aircraft is usually reporting something at stage three or four. A headline that says Airbus “is considering” one is at stage one or two. Keep that distinction when judging the financial effect of any announcement.
For investors and anyone following Airbus as a company, the practical signals to watch are a formal launch announcement, a published specification, and firm orders for the larger variant. Until those appear, the A220-500 is a plausible option that the company is weighing against its current workload.
”
The Bottom Line
Airbus is weighing a larger A220 that could lower program costs and extend the family’s reach, but it has not approved the aircraft, and its own statements put the decision behind current production and Spirit AeroSystems integration work. Treat the A220-500 as a possibility until Airbus publishes a launch decision, a specification, and firm orders.
