How much is a used BMW i8?
Kelley Blue Book’s national fair-purchase estimates, accessed in 2026, put a typical 2020 i8 Coupe at $62,000 and a 2020 i8 Roadster at $68,500. Compared with their original MSRPs, each is about 58% lower. These percentages are calculated from KBB’s figures; KBB does not publish them as depreciation statistics.

A particular car’s mileage, condition, location and equipment can change its price. What does the depreciation estimate show?
KBB’s displayed estimate for a 2020 i8 shows a resale value of $59,456 for 2025 and $57,900 in the snapshot accessed in 2026, with $1,556 shown as depreciation. KBB explicitly cautions that this is an estimate based on similar vehicles and market data, “not a guarantee of actual depreciation.” The short dated comparison is not evidence of a stable resale floor or a prediction of what a future buyer will pay. For context, KBB’s snapshot for a 2016 i8 Coupe lists a current resale value of $41,100 and trade-in value of $36,700. Those are different valuation types, and the displayed passage does not provide a comparable original MSRP. They therefore do not establish a 2016 model’s depreciation percentage. Is the BMW i8 a bargain because it depreciated so much?
It can be a more accessible way to buy an exotic-looking plug-in hybrid than its original MSRP suggests. But “bargain” depends on the full cost and condition of the specific car, not just the discount from its launch price. The available figures establish a steep decline in estimated purchase value; they do not establish future resale performance or i8-specific maintenance, repair, insurance or battery-replacement costs.

BMW says the i8 is a plug-in hybrid, not a battery-only car. Its layout combines a front electric motor with a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine over the rear axle, and BMW states that it can be driven without an electric charge. - Compare like with like. Match Coupe or Roadster, mileage, condition, equipment and location. Keep dealer fair-purchase estimates separate from private-party asking prices and trade-in values.
- Verify the individual car. Review its service history and have it inspected by a qualified professional familiar with the vehicle. The market estimates alone cannot tell you whether a particular car is in good condition.
- Check battery coverage by VIN. BMW says high-voltage battery capacity decreases with time and use. Its current U.S. warranty page describes an 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery defect warranty, whichever comes first, measured from the vehicle’s in-service date. That general wording does not establish that a used i8 remains covered: ask BMW to confirm the applicable model-specific terms, market, in-service date, mileage and VIN. - Budget for ownership separately from the purchase price. Get insurance and service estimates for the actual car, and consider how you would handle an unexpected repair. The available figures do not quantify those costs for the i8.

What the price drop does—and does not—tell you
- It does show: KBB’s 2026-accessed national estimates put both 2020 i8 body styles well below their original MSRPs.
- It does not show: that a specific listing is fairly priced, that the car will hold its value, or that ownership will be inexpensive.
- It cannot choose the body style for you: the Roadster had a higher original MSRP and a higher current estimated purchase price in KBB’s comparison. The figures do not establish that either version is a better investment.
