The claim cannot be confirmed as written. The headline does not name the crossover, the market, or the sales period, so there is no like-for-like figure to check it against. What can be verified is the Toyota Camry Hybrid’s own U.S. sales trend and its standing in one 2025 registration category. Those numbers are below, along with the checks needed before any crossover can be said to outsell it.

“Outselling” is only meaningful when both vehicles are counted the same way. Before accepting a headline like this one, confirm the following:

The increase from 2024 to 2025 is 110,959 units, or about 54 percent. These are Camry Hybrid figures only. They do not show how the Camry Hybrid ranks against any particular crossover, because no crossover figure is given in the same table.

Why the 2025 Camry Hybrid sold in volume
Toyota announced on April 18, 2024 that the 2025 U.S. Camry would be offered only as a hybrid, using the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations. Toyota’s launch material lists 225 net combined horsepower for front-wheel-drive models and 232 for all-wheel-drive models. Those are manufacturer specifications for the U.S. model.
Camry chief engineer Mark DeJongh, speaking with Motor1.com in an April 18, 2024 interview about the hybrid-only decision, said: “It’s just the right vehicle at the right time.” That is the engineer’s own assessment of the timing, not a measured sales driver.

The hybrid-only change is the clearest documented difference in the 2025 model, but the sources do not show how much of the year-over-year increase it explains. Pricing, incentives, inventory, and fleet sales are not broken out in the material available.
What the 2025 registration ranking does and does not show
Experian’s Q4 2025 alternative-fuel registration summary says the Camry Hybrid led its alternative-fuel car model category in that quarter. That is a quarterly registration ranking within one category. It is not an annual sales total, and it does not compare the Camry Hybrid with a crossover. A quarterly category lead cannot settle an annual, cross-body-style comparison in either direction.

How to test the headline yourself
- Name the crossover, including the generation and model years you want to compare.
- Pull the manufacturer’s annual U.S. sales release for both vehicles for the same calendar or model year.
- Confirm both figures use the same basis, such as retail sales rather than wholesale shipments.
- If the crossover comes in several powertrains, compare hybrid-only totals with hybrid-only totals, or whole-nameplate totals with whole-nameplate totals.
- Cross-check against state or industry registration data for the same quarter or year, and note where the two sources disagree.
Comparisons that matter if you are choosing between them
Sales rank is a poor guide to whether a vehicle fits your budget or driving needs. If you are weighing a Camry Hybrid against a hybrid crossover, compare these items for the specific trims you are considering:
- Price and the trim you would actually buy, not the starting price alone
- EPA fuel economy ratings for the exact powertrain and drive configuration
- Passenger space, cargo volume, and ride height, which differ sharply between sedans and crossovers
- Powertrain output and drive configuration, including front-wheel versus all-wheel drive
- Warranty terms, including hybrid battery coverage
- Standard safety and driver-assistance equipment for the model year you are buying
None of these have been checked for any specific hybrid crossover in this article, so treat them as a checklist rather than a result.
