Contact an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) when you need an in-person service offered at a local IRS office. Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) when you may qualify for help with an unresolved IRS problem, economic harm, or a missed response deadline. A TAC visit is an appointment for local services; TAS is a free advocacy service whose acceptance of a case is not guaranteed.
Which service fits your situation?
| Your situation | Best first step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need an in-person IRS service | Check the local TAC’s service list, then call 844-545-5640 to make an appointment. | TACs provide scheduled in-person services, and offerings vary by office. IRS local office guidance |
| An IRS problem is causing economic harm or significant cost | Review TAS eligibility and contact TAS or use its qualifier tool. | This may be a reason TAS can help, but contact does not guarantee case acceptance. IRS TAS eligibility guidance |
| Your issue has gone unresolved through ordinary IRS channels, the delay exceeds 30 days, or the IRS missed a promised response date | Consider asking TAS for help. | These are possible eligibility indicators, not a promise that TAS will take the case. IRS TAS eligibility guidance |
| You need a balance, transcript, payment, refund-status update, or general information | Check IRS online and phone options first. | Many routine tasks have self-service or telephone routes, so an office visit may not be necessary. IRS tax help options IRS contact options |
The key distinction is purpose: a TAC provides local, in-person IRS services, while TAS considers qualifying tax problems that need advocacy. Neither is a general shortcut around required tax procedures.
What a Taxpayer Assistance Center does
A TAC is a local IRS office for scheduled in-person help. The services offered are location-specific, so do not assume that every office can handle the same issue. Use the IRS local office locator and contact page to find an office and verify its services.
How to arrange a TAC visit
- Look up the nearest office on the IRS local office page and confirm it handles your issue.
- Call 844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment. The IRS asks taxpayers to make appointments ahead of time.
- Follow that office’s current preparation instructions. IRS guidance says to bring two original forms of identification, including a current government-issued photo ID, and a copy of the tax return for the year in question if you filed one. Bring any issue-specific records or documents the office requests.
Do not assume walk-ins are accepted or rely on a general estimate for appointment availability; check current details for the specific location.

When TAS may be able to help
The Taxpayer Advocate Service describes itself as an independent organization within the IRS. Its employees assist taxpayers experiencing economic harm, taxpayers who have been unable to resolve a problem through normal IRS channels, and taxpayers who believe an IRS system or procedure is not working properly. The IRS lists possible eligibility examples, including significant cost or economic harm, a delay of more than 30 days, or no response or resolution by the date the IRS promised.
These circumstances are signals to check eligibility, not automatic qualifications. TAS assistance is free, but TAS may not accept every request and does not promise a particular outcome. Its contact materials also warn that high request volume can delay responses, so consult the current TAS contact guidance rather than expecting a specific turnaround.

How to request TAS assistance
- Use the TAS Qualifier Tool to check whether your circumstances may fit.
- Call TAS at 1-877-777-4778.
- Submit Form 911, Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance.
The IRS advises taxpayers to try resolving a problem through ordinary IRS channels first. TAS is not a general IRS escalation line, and contacting it does not replace following the instructions or deadlines on an IRS notice or using a formal appeal route. Continue taking any action required by a notice while seeking help; for advice about a specific legal or tax position, consult a qualified professional.
Try routine IRS options before arranging either contact
For common account, payment, transcript, refund-status, and information needs, start with the IRS’s online and phone help options or its contact page. These channels may resolve a routine task without a scheduled office visit. If they do not resolve a significant problem, review whether your circumstances fit TAS’s criteria.
