Are Credit Card Welcome Bonuses Worth an Annual Fee?

A welcome bonus can offset a card’s annual fee in year one if you can earn and redeem it without extra spending. Renewal depends on recurring value.

Sometimes—but usually only for the first year. A welcome bonus can justify an annual fee when you can earn it with spending you already planned, redeem it for something you genuinely value, and keep the bonus’s usable value above the fee and any extra costs. Before renewing, set the one-time bonus aside and compare the fee with rewards and benefits you expect to use every year.

How to tell whether the bonus covers the annual fee

Start with the value you expect to realize, not the number of points or miles in the offer. There is no universal cash value for points: value depends on the program and redemption, and programs can change redemption terms. Estimate the bonus using a specific redemption you would actually make.

Use this framework for the first year:

First-year net value = realistically usable welcome bonus + realistically usable first-year benefits and rewards − annual fee − incremental costs to qualify.

This is a way to organize your own estimates, not a published statistic. Do not count spending rewards twice if they are already included in your bonus valuation. And do not treat purchases made only to reach the bonus threshold as free value.

Compare the offer with a no-fee alternative

A positive first-year result does not by itself prove that the fee-paying card is your best choice. Compare it with a similar no-annual-fee card: account for the fee, the bonus you could realistically earn and redeem, and the ongoing rewards and benefits you would use. The relevant question is whether the fee-paying card leaves you better off—not whether its headline bonus looks large.

Check the spending requirement before applying

Welcome bonuses are conditional. Before you apply, confirm the live offer’s minimum spending requirement, deadline, eligible transactions, exclusions, eligibility rules and account-standing requirements. Offers differ, so general examples cannot establish the terms of a particular card; check the issuer’s current offer directly. Chase’s guide to welcome bonuses discusses common formats, conditions and redemption options.

Ask whether the threshold fits your ordinary planned expenses before the deadline. If you would need to buy things you do not need, pay costs you otherwise would not incur, or risk carrying a balance to earn the bonus, those costs can erase its value. An application may also involve a hard inquiry and a temporary credit-score dip; the size or duration of any effect for a particular person is not established here.

Value benefits realistically, not at face value

Include first-year benefits only to the extent you would use and value them. A credit or perk is not worth its advertised amount if you would not otherwise spend in that category, cannot use it conveniently, or would change your habits to claim it. Guidance from U.S. Bank similarly frames the decision around comparing a card’s actual benefits with its annual fee.

The FDIC advises consumers to understand card terms, spending requirements and what is needed to maintain points. It also notes that some cards waive the annual fee only in the first year, then charge it later. FDIC: “Take Charge of Your Credit Cards”

Recalculate before the next annual fee

A welcome bonus is a one-time benefit, so do not use it to justify every renewal. For each later year, estimate the rewards you would earn through normal spending and the benefits you would genuinely use, then compare that recurring value with the fee due. If the card no longer earns its keep, compare it with a no-fee alternative and review the issuer’s account terms before deciding whether to keep or change the account.

Why the advertised bonus is not guaranteed value

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns that rewards can be devalued, denied or revoked under buried or vague conditions, or deducted without the promised benefit. Its Circular 2024-07 explains these consumer-protection concerns. That is why your estimate should be based on the redemption and terms you can verify, rather than the offer’s headline presentation.

The CFPB also reported that more than 90 percent of general-purpose credit card spending occurred on rewards cards in 2019. In figures it attributed to 2022, 75 percent of general-purpose credit cards were rewards cards, consumers earned more than $40 billion in rewards from major general-purpose cards, and consumer rewards balances exceeded $33 billion. These market figures, reported in the CFPB’s 2024 circular, describe the scale of rewards programs; they do not predict what an individual cardholder will receive.

A side-by-side checklist for comparing offers

Use the same criteria for each card so a large point total does not distract from a poor fit:

  • Annual fee and whether it is waived in the first year.
  • Bonus amount after the spending you are likely to make with eligible transactions.
  • Realistic value for the redemption you intend to use.
  • Spending deadline and excluded transactions.
  • Eligibility restrictions, including any new-customer or prior-account conditions.
  • Recurring rewards and benefits you would actually use.
  • Whether that recurring value exceeds the fee in later years.
