IRS Extension Deadline Is October 15, 2026: What Filers Need to Know

Most timely extension filers must submit their 2025 federal individual return by October 15, 2026. The extension did not delay the April 15 payment deadline.

Most individuals who timely requested an extension for their 2025 federal income tax return must file by October 15, 2026. The extension moved the filing deadline—not the payment deadline: any unpaid 2025 federal income tax was due April 15, 2026, and penalties and interest may apply to late payment. The often-cited figure of more than 20 million taxpayers refers to the IRS’s estimate for the prior year’s extended deadline, not a verified count of people facing the October 2026 deadline.

Who has an October 15, 2026, federal filing deadline?

The date generally applies to calendar-year individual taxpayers who timely requested the standard extension for their 2025 Form 1040. The IRS’s 2026 e-file schedule lists October 15 as the last date to transmit a return on extension from Form 4868. See the IRS 2025 tax-year, 2026 processing-year Form 1040 e-file due-date schedule.

This is a general federal individual-return deadline, not a universal date for every taxpayer or tax form. Disaster relief, overseas status, military service, and other circumstances may affect a particular taxpayer’s deadline. Check the IRS’s guidance on e-file due dates and extensions for special circumstances. State return deadlines can differ from the federal date; confirm the applicable date with your state tax agency.

Does an extension give you until October 15 to pay?

No. An extension gives extra time to file, not extra time to pay. The IRS said that any tax owed was due April 15, 2026, even if the taxpayer requested more time to file. If you have not paid the full amount, penalties and interest may apply. The IRS explains this in its April 14, 2026, extension guidance.

What if an electronically filed return is rejected?

The IRS schedule lists October 20, 2026, as the last date to retransmit rejected, late, or extended returns under that schedule. This is a retransmission date for the cases specified by the IRS—not an extra filing period for every taxpayer. October 15 remains the listed final transmission date for returns on extension from Form 4868. Consult the IRS e-file schedule for the applicable transmission and retransmission rules.

Does the 20-million figure apply to 2026?

Not on the evidence cited here. In an October 14, 2025, reminder, the IRS said it expected more than 20 million taxpayers to file by that year’s extended due date. That estimate concerned the prior filing season and does not establish how many taxpayers will file by October 15, 2026. See the IRS’s October 14, 2025, reminder.
