Iron Lung opened strongly in theaters even as Rotten Tomatoes critics were divided: as of October 4, 2026, its Tomatometer was 59%, compared with an 86% Popcornmeter score from verified audience ratings. Its early box-office figures make it a notable creator-led release—not proof that independent horror as a whole is booming, or that the film turned a profit.
What Rotten Tomatoes says about critics and audiences
Rotten Tomatoes listed Iron Lung at 59% on the Tomatometer from 49 critic reviews and 86% on the Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified audience ratings, as of October 4, 2026. These are live aggregates, so the scores and counts may change. The Tomatometer percentage is the share of counted reviews classified as positive; it is not an average star rating. The 59% is just below Rotten Tomatoes’ 60% Fresh threshold, which makes “critics’ flop” a catchy shorthand for the score but not a fair description of every review. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page says the film can become “just plain stifling,” while also praising its atmosphere and calling writer-director Mark Edward Fischbach a filmmaker to watch.
| Measure | Score and sample | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatometer | 59%; 49 critic reviews, as of October 4, 2026 (Rotten Tomatoes) | Just below the 60% Fresh threshold; a review-classification share, not an average rating. |
| Popcornmeter | 86%; 2,500+ verified audience ratings, as of October 4, 2026 (Rotten Tomatoes) | A substantially more positive audience response in this snapshot; the rating count and score may change. |
The gap shows a difference between the critical and verified audience responses recorded on that date. It does not establish why viewers rated the film more highly, nor does either percentage measure box-office demand directly.
What the “$21 million debut” figure actually means
The headline figure is a rounded early worldwide opening-period number, not the precise domestic opening-weekend gross or a verified lifetime total. The University of Cincinnati reported nearly $22 million globally on opening weekend on February 3, 2026. Forbes reported an $18.1 million domestic opening weekend and, by February 4, a cumulative worldwide gross of $24.7 million: $21.5 million domestic and $3.2 million international. Those are dated figures with different scopes. Forbes’ February 4 report and the University of Cincinnati’s February 3 report should not be collapsed into one exact “$21 million opening.”

The available figures establish an early theatrical result, not the film’s final lifetime gross. They also describe box-office receipts, not the amount received by the filmmakers.
Why the opening matters—and what it cannot prove financially
Forbes reported that the film cost $3 million to produce, was self-financed and self-distributed, and played in 3,015 theaters nationwide. These are reported figures, not audited accounts. Set against that reported production budget, the opening-period gross looks striking. But gross receipts are not net profit: the figures here do not show marketing and distribution costs, theater revenue shares, financing terms, or how much money ultimately reached the production. A gross-to-budget comparison alone cannot establish whether the film broke even or made a profit.
The personal-finance lesson is the distinction between revenue and earnings. A prominent gross can signal audience demand and commercial reach, but a project’s financial outcome depends on costs and how receipts are divided. Those details are not established by the reported opening figures.

Iron Lung is a 2026 horror and science-fiction feature written and directed by Mark Edward Fischbach, known as Markiplier. It adapts David Szymanski’s 2022 video game: a convict is welded into a submarine and sent to explore an ocean of blood on a barren moon. Rotten Tomatoes lists a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes, a January 30, 2026 theatrical release, and Markiplier Studios as both production company and distributor. Forbes reported the self-financing and self-distribution model and the 3,015-theater footprint.

Exhibitor support was part of the release’s reach. In a February 2 announcement, Regal said Iron Lung played from Thursday, January 29 through Sunday, February 1 and accounted for 19% of admissions among North American exhibitors at Regal during that period. That is a Regal-specific share, not 19% of all North American movie admissions or box office. Regal also said it was the first major exhibitor to partner on a wide theatrical release at 99% of its locations. These details come from Regal’s own announcement, which is evidence of the exhibitor’s support and framing, not an independent market-wide analysis.
Regal CEO Eduardo Acuna called the film a reminder that filmmaking depends on “creativity, commitment, and connection with your audience.” Fischbach, in the same release, said Regal wanted to support the film from their first conversation, including by helping arrange a blood drive. The partnership offers a concrete example of how a creator’s audience and an exhibitor’s theatrical infrastructure can meet; it does not show that every creator-led film can secure the same footprint.
Was it a huge win for independent horror?
It is reasonable to call Iron Lung a prominent success story for creator-led independent horror in the limited sense that a reported $3 million production reached thousands of theaters and attracted a substantial opening audience. Its self-financed, self-distributed setup and Regal’s reported support make the release noteworthy.
One film cannot establish a sector-wide boom. The cited reports do not provide a comparison set of independent horror releases, their budgets, or their returns. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Iron Lung demonstrates that a creator-led horror property can achieve significant theatrical reach under particular circumstances. It does not prove that independent horror overall is flourishing or that this release was profitable.

Streaming and the Blood Bucket collectible
Rotten Tomatoes lists May 31, 2026 as a streaming release date but does not name a service or territory. The available information therefore does not establish where the film can currently be streamed.
Regal also documented a promotional Blood Bucket project: its files had been downloaded more than 20,000 times, and a preorder for a non-DIY version was offered through February 16, 2026. That preorder window has passed; the cited announcement does not establish current stock or a current retailer listing.
