Mukesh Kumar topped the IPL 2023 auction ranking by sale price relative to base price: Delhi Capitals paid ₹5.50 crore for a player listed at ₹20 lakh, or 27.5 times his base. Shivam Mavi (15×), Vivrant Sharma (13×), Sam Curran (9.3×) and Mayank Dagar (9×) followed. That is a different measure from the highest sale price: Sam Curran fetched ₹18.50 crore, the auction’s top price overall.
Which players sold for the biggest multiples of their base prices?
The table ranks the five leading players by sold price divided by base price. One crore equals 100 lakh. The figures follow SalarySport’s ranking and are cross-checked against India Today’s contemporaneous sold-player list.

“Times base” is a ratio, not the extra amount paid. For example, Mukesh Kumar’s price was 27.5 times his base, while the rupee increase over that base was ₹5.30 crore.
Why the biggest multiple is not the biggest price increase
The ratio favors players whose base prices were low. By contrast, Sam Curran’s sale price exceeded his ₹2 crore base by ₹16.50 crore—the largest absolute increase among the five players above. Cameron Green, sold for ₹17.50 crore against a ₹2 crore base, and Ben Stokes, sold for ₹16.25 crore against the same base, also had large rupee increases. Neither had a multiple as high as Mukesh Kumar’s.

So “biggest” depends on the question: Mukesh Kumar led by multiple of base price; Sam Curran led by total sale price and by rupees above base among these leading multiples.
What “much higher” means in this ranking
The auction did not define an official threshold for “much higher.” Ranking players by the sold-price-to-base-price ratio makes the comparison explicit. SalarySport reports that 52 of the 80 players sold went for their base price, meaning 28 sold above base in that dataset. A broader list would need a stated cutoff, such as at least three times base; that would be an editorial choice, not an official auction category.

When and how the IPL 2023 auction took place
The auction for the 2023 season was held in Kochi on 23 December 2022. The official IPL media advisory said the final auction list contained 405 cricketers: 273 Indian and 132 overseas players, including four from associate nations. Those numbers describe the pre-auction list, not the number bought. For the completed auction, SalarySport and India Today report that 80 players were sold.
