What the listed price does—and does not—include
Sales tax comes on top
Apple’s displayed prices are before sales tax. The amount you pay depends on the shipping address or the Apple Store location selected for pickup. Apple explains its sales tax and payment details.
Trade-in credits are not the same as the phone’s price
Apple and carriers may advertise credits of up to $800–$1,100 on qualifying purchases. Those offers depend on the phone being traded in, the carrier, the model purchased, and the terms of the promotion. Check the applicable terms on Apple’s iPhone purchase page.

Storage upgrades: what you are paying for
| Model | Lowest capacity | Highest capacity | Price increase from lowest to highest |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | 256GB | 512GB | $200 |
| iPhone 17 | 256GB | 512GB | $200 |
| iPhone Air | 256GB | 1TB | $400 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | 256GB | 1TB | $400 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | 256GB | 2TB | $800 |
Across the lineup, increasing storage costs $200 per step except for the Pro Max’s 1TB-to-2TB jump, which costs $400. If you are deciding between a higher-capacity model and a more expensive model tier, compare the total—not just the monthly payment shown by a carrier.

- Choose the model and storage first. This gives you the true starting price instead of the lowest headline price for a different configuration.
- Check the connectivity selection. For the iPhone 17, compare the $829 “Connect on your own later” price with the $799 carrier-activation price.
- Add local sales tax. Apple calculates it from the delivery address or pickup location.
- Subtract confirmed credits only. Include a trade-in value or carrier promotion only after checking its eligibility requirements and payout structure.
- Budget for ownership costs. Include your cellular plan, AppleCare+ if wanted, and any accessories you would otherwise buy separately.
Also note that the U.S. iPhone 17e, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models use eSIM only and do not include a physical SIM tray. That is not a separate line-item charge, but it can matter if your current phone or carrier setup depends on a physical SIM. See Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 store page.
