That is a ranking of one model’s sales over the year—not a claim that it was the best phone for every buyer, or that it led every measure of the smartphone market.
What the 2025 ranking says
Counterpoint’s announcement identifies the iPhone 16 as the top model for the full year. Its headline also says Apple took seven of the top ten places. MacRumors, reporting the same day and attributing its figures to Counterpoint, says Samsung accounted for the other three models. The ten models together represented 19% of overall smartphone sales, according to that report.
The result answers “What was the best-selling smartphone in 2025?” with a specific model: iPhone 16. It does not establish that Apple led every possible sales, shipment, revenue, market-share, or customer-satisfaction measure. The detailed methodology and full chart were not available in Counterpoint’s accessible announcement, so the ranking should be read as Counterpoint’s model-sales result rather than a broader measure of market leadership.
Full-year result versus a quarterly ranking
Counterpoint also placed iPhone 16 first for Q1 2025. That is a separate, interim period: it provides context, but the Q1 result alone does not prove which model finished first across the whole year. The full-year claim comes from Counterpoint’s January 29, 2026 announcement.

What the ranking does—and does not—tell a buyer
A sales ranking can show that a model sold well within the ranking’s stated market and period. It cannot tell an individual buyer whether the phone suits their budget, preferred operating system, camera needs, or upgrade timing. Nor does the available reporting establish why consumers bought the iPhone 16; its features are product specifications, not demonstrated causes of its rank.
Relevant iPhone 16 specifications
Apple lists the iPhone 16 with an A18 chip, a 6.1-inch OLED display, a dual-camera system with a 48MP Fusion main camera and 12MP Ultra Wide camera, and a USB-C connector. The specification page also lists MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging support and a 128GB capacity for the configuration shown. These details can help assess whether the phone fits a buyer’s needs, but they do not explain the sales result. Specifications and regional offerings can vary; check Apple’s current local product page before purchasing.

Budgeting for an iPhone 16 purchase
The model’s sales rank is not a reason by itself to buy or upgrade. Compare the current local price with the cost of keeping your existing phone, and consider whether the iPhone 16’s features solve a need you actually have. Apple says eligible smartphones may be traded in for credit toward a new iPhone; eligibility and terms depend on the current regional offer, so verify them before treating trade-in value as part of your budget.
